I use a blank index card in every book to write down words I don't know or thoughts at leisure.

I use two or more bookmarks if I need to reference different sections constantly (say in a book with an important appendix, index, etc.), or if I'm in the middle of a couple of short stories at once.

Although I use a lot of page flags and book darts, too, for the index/appendix/etc.

most of my books have bookmarks in them (I use a deck of playing cards I received at a career fair, probably the only trinket of any sort of practical use I've ever received from those events)
I'll probably just remove the bookmarks when I finally get back to reading the books and start over though, as it's been months, if not years in some cases, since I actually started reading those books
