FUCKING FRANKENSTEIN thank you goddamnit I love that book. In my edition it also has "The Vampyre" by Paliodori and another little horror short by Byron. "The Vampyre," was great.
I loved Frankenstein so much, that after I read it, I went and bought all the books that the monster found and read and described (Paradise Lost, Plutarch's Lives, etc)
Also see the Frankenstein comic book that the Wakowski brothers are a part of. Here's a page of it - it's great.

The Book of Daniel by EL Doctorow. Awesome book, absolutely recommend it to anyone.

Also love Flaubert's Parrot, another book I'd recommend to everyone (best read after reading some Flaubert, like Madame Bovary or Salammbo).

Mountains of the Mind is one of the best nonfiction books I've read in ages. Pascali's Island was a really enjoyable story rather than message-driven book which few people seem to have ever heard of.

Heart of Darkness is a given. Anyone who hasn't read it needs to.

I have heaps of favourites, I could just keep going but then that would defeat the purpose of having favourites.

The first three after Dune (Dune Messiah, Children of Dune and God Emperor of Dune) are good. God Emperor is God Emperor-tier sci-fi and at least equals Dune.

The next two by him are fucking weird.

The ones by his son are shit and lack many of the things that made the series a master work. They give a history of the Dune universe if you're interested in that, but there's not really any of the philosophical, political etc. stuff that made Dune such a success.

I actually don't have a favorite book. I've read good books that I've liked alot before, but none of them where I would say my "favorite." I've never read a book that touched me on a sub-conscious level to where I think it would be superior to all other books. Maybe it's because I like to read mostly sci-fi novels.

Alright /lit/ I have a question, what do you call it when when you phonetically write the sounds instead of describing them?

For example take this from a clockwork orange:

"From inside this malenky cottage I could slooshy the clack clack clacky clack clack clackity clackclack of
some veck typing away."

The part with the clack clack clacky clack clack clackity. What do you call that in writing?

Thanks.

Don Quixote! Fuck yeah! I'm about to finish it, and it's so much different than I expected. I saw Man of La Mancha a few years ago and had such a rosy picture of it before I read the book... now the title theme is kind of ruined for me, but I like Cervantes' blend of tragedy and comedy that makes it hard to tell the two apart. Is it okay to laugh at Don Quixote? We may never know...
