If you hang around long enough you might be able to find a gem. The crit threads are generally terrible. Reddit is reddit, but again, there's the odd gem. There's a guy trying to make a literary journal out of work done by some people on here so you could look at that.

You're not going to find a place filled to the brim with promising talent. Such a place doesn't exist else /lit/ would be far more unbearable.

I expect that I just don't know where to look. I assume it will be like 4chan where you have to wade through miles of shit to find a good post, but they exist. I am happy to look. Lots of great authors go long periods without being "discovered" I am sure there is a lot of great talent out there. I went to my local university and got a copy of their literary publican where students publish their work and I found some good writing there. I am thinking about contacting one of them

I do write. I had one story published in a reputable literary journal for weird fiction, but I am having trouble finding a literary agent for my picture books. One of my stories is already illustrated and the other is in the process. I have a decent social media following too, yet I still cannot find any agent interested in my picture book.

I have started writing over the last several weeks, mostly out of boredom. Ever since I’ve been attempting sobriety I have started to read and write after a years long stint of not consuming a single book. I came to /lit/ for the first time ever today, despite being on 4chins since 2009. I was specifically looking for a thread like this. I feel like since I haven’t read much in a long time, my writings will be natural in the sense that I haven’t been exposed to a massive amount of literature, thus I’m not in danger of replicating the styles of others either on purpose or by accident. However, I’m rather terrified that someone will call my baby ugly.

Tl;dr I haven’t read a lot but I want to write.

Still don't get what exactly you mean by modern fiction. Is it fiction writen in this era social context? the type that tries to define the characters based on their existential needs and questions? Something like the story of some heartbroken no great looking girl that confesses her desilution and some crime related secret to some guy she just met at a underground free zone club for youngsters, college students that like some drinking and smoking weed at some abandoned building parking lot . All told by this guy who was high at the moment when the girl approached at him drunk to finally say she was going to take her own life.
Some not so confusing postmodern type of shortstory this might turn out to be.

What you are looking for is someone with very deep existential and moral issues, the type of person that hurts himself by thinking to much. Those are the kind of writers that fly between internal conflict and end up falling into a never ending depression. Just got myself into that void of self-destruction, can't help more than that. You can look for screenwriters work at the blacklist, thats the type of web you are looking for, is highly probable that many of those are also writing some novels. Post your findings, it would be great for the writing community to have knowledge of places like blcklist.
