"The story is narrated by a man in his mid-twenties who suddenly becomes disillusioned and confused by life and therefore quits university. The narrator becomes fascinated by both modern scientific theories of time and relativity (by reading a book by Paul Davies) and also by repetitive childish activities such as playing with BRIO children's toys and repeatedly throwing a ball against a wall."

once i smoked a blunt cos i was procrastinating doing an essay for English but then i read this anyway whilst i was stoned & wrote a big piece about how philosophy is bullshit & all that & then i had to hand it in the next day anyway or id get a slip sent home for missing homework.

never re-read it but im fond of it because of that & because i find Hume funny - the typical fat outcast philosopher.

I live in Northern Ireland, so I'll pretend my country is the United Kingdom. If that's not allowed, then Dubliners.

a "B" sort of mark. it wasnt too serious folio work or anything. it was our first time choosing a non-fiction piece to write about. she found it funny & gave me a hug after class. she's a slightly fat teacher but it made me feel warm inside.

I love books about The Troubles.
Check out Iris Murdoch's "The Red and the Green" (albeit, it was about the earlier "Troubles"). I don't seem to remember it being mawkish or sentimental.

I've read the English translation, too.

You English speakers don't know what you're missing :D
