Looking for title of a book I read many years ago. Sci-fi.
Plot.
A guy is off world on a worker planet in a collective hovel. He's in love with one of the other worker's wives and takes a drug in tandem with buying dolls and doll houses/dioramas to give the trip a realistic setting and objects to interact with while on the drug. The drug is illegal but everyone uses it because their lives are so shitty.

Also, there are some people who have enough money to evolve themselves while still living to beyond human capabilities. I think the author describes their heads as enlarged and covered in a chitinous hardened shell.
