how often are you forced to subvocalize, /lit/?

>forced
i don't believe i am ever forced to subvocalize, although i do it for almost everything i read. the only exceptions, really, are titles and things like that

I find I have to do this more often the less engaged I am in what I'm reading. That said, sometimes I enjoy the "sound" of the prose itself, and subvocalize in order to both see and "hear" the text.

Of course, if somebody else in the house is SCREAMING, sometimes I've got to do it just so I can focus on what the heck I'm reading!

How are you supposed to read without subvocalizing?

what kind of retard has to subvocalize to read?

>> No.13189780

If you don't subvocalize then your appreciation of prose is like that of a child

Do both.
You should be thinking whenever you are not absorbed in something. When you are absorbed in something, you should be feeling.

With your brain Anon, you gaze upon the word and its meaning is revealed to you.

Subvocalizing is required to appreciate prose and poetry, useless in any other case. Once you've read enough you can turn it on and off at will.

Why would you be reading anything that isn't prose or poetry? Everything /lit/ requires subvocalization to fully appreciate.

>> No.13189954

fuck, whenever someone brings up subvocalization i cant stop doing it. its like when someone says not to think of something and u think of that. thanks op, now my head is filled with my retarded voice.

This is your brain on /lit/, when you use terms and don’t even know what they mean.

I remember reading a study that showed that reading without subvocalizing is more akin to listening to an audio book than reading-proper.

>> No.13192114

>>13189764
Am retarded, but I personally do it because it makes me absorb more of what I'm reading than if I just read in my head. Not sure why, maybe it's the brainlet mind at work

if your reading poetry or interesting prose, subvicalize to fully enjoy it. if the writing itself isn't that great, dont.
