The Doomed City. A nazi lieutenant just led a bunch of random people into battle against the baboons but they failed to engage. I guess the whole thing is supposed to symbolize how confusing the actions of the state felt to the average soviet citizen but it's simply to ridiculous. One of the baboons sprayed a fat Greek with diarrhea.

When the author is haphazardly throwing geographical locations at me a map sure comes handy. Doesn't need to be anything fancy, just a general outlining. Apart from that, I'm indifferent, but at the same time, I do like scrutinising maps for the sake of it.

He does put on a more feminine voice when he does the female characters, and it's a bit funny, but I find it endearing and quite good (considering the fact that he is a middle-aged+ man). The whole thing feels a bit like an elderly relative reading you a story, and there are no sound effects or anything of the sort (which is apparently a thing in some audiobooks?).

As a kid I liked them, but now I get annoyed every time a book has one. Usually when that's the case, the author feels like he can just namedrop his locations and people will just check the map. No you fucking dickwad, I'm not gonna do your work for you. If you characters are traveling, you should be competent enough to convey it clearly in your prose.

Maps are a big plus for me, since the setting and world building a big reason for why I get into fantasy series. There's plenty of fantasy series I've read where the map doesn't add much to the story, but on the whole I think it can't hurt.

Tolkien's maps will always be my favorites. I'm quite partial to this map of Beleriand, I have a fold out version in my copy of the Silmarillion.

I was bothered by that too, until I read The Silmarillion. The Valar (god-like beings) can warp the geography of the world. Melkor, the evil Valar, actually did that to protect his fortress in the North of Beleriand (a continent west of middle earth that flooded), so it could have very well happened again with Mordor. The Valar can shape, warp and flood entire continents at will.

tldr: it's intentional.

They are called graphic audio. Early Anita Blake used to have gunshot sound effects with the books. Stopped in later books.

Tough to say since I haven't read the original in a long time so my memories of it are more vague impressions of how I felt about things rather than details. On the whole I feel like the new series ramps up faster, but I think that's something Tad Williams has just gotten better at over time in general, I feel he's genuinely improved as a writer over the years I've been reading him.

From what I recall of the original series, it was a lot more tightly focused on a narrow set of characters, primarily following Simon in a very typical-for-the-time heroic fantasy story. Last King of Osten Ard though jumps around a lot, which is something Tad Williams started doing more in his later books, particularly Shadowmarch and Otherland, where you not only get protagonist but also antagonist points of view, often times in overlapping scenes.

So as a result the new series feels more dynamic and quicker to jump into the intrigue and mystery that makes his books so compelling, I'm glad to see he's brought everything he's learned over the last 30 years back to Osten Ard.

It's long, and can be very dry, but is rewarding. Start if you're willing to sink some time into it and like seeing the rise (and downfall, in Dune Messiah) of a religious figure.

Super long. The first book throws you in the deep end and is a bit different to the others, second book is god-tier, depending on how you find it, you'll know how you feel about the rest by then. If you like tons of characters across multiple continents with tons of shit happening, you'll like it.

I reccomend this, as the first book has a nice open-ish ending if you want to stop there, as does the third book - the rest make you read all the way to the end to get closure. For all it's called the progenitor of grimdark, it's actuay comfy as fuck. Read if you like seeing a mercenary company in low-fantasy world.

In general I like having maps, the problem starts when the writer has no sense of scale.

The two problems I see most often.

1. The writer has a location that is treated as exotic to most of the characters but the map obviously shows that it isn't really all that far.

2. Distances shown as being very long are crossed very quickly (you don't really need a map to have this problem but it just makes it more glaring)

One of the show runners read the early books, liked it, told the other show runner to read it. He liked it too. They said lets make a show about it. Sold it to HBO after many years of effort. You need people in the TV industry, the fact they've read a particular book(s), hope for a miracle a network wants it, countless other lucky factors and finally a show is made. No one was making fantasy shows of that scale before GoT. Hell it wasn't even a success until around season 3 and it got caught up in a perfect storm of water cooler gossip. Only because ASoIaF has been a success do any of those other authors get a chance to be serialized. It's why there are LotR and WoT and The Witcher shows currently being filmed.

Yeah, those are a holdover from radioplays, which used to be a thing in the 80's and earlier.
Some of these aren't too bad. I think the solaris full cast audiobook is ok. Feels nice to listen to.
Even if the plain narrated one is better.

It's not actually a great animu at all, it just starts off as a mediocre anime/manga interspersed with some bizarrely occasionally well executed moments of characterisation, usually of characters outside the main cast since the protagonist is quite annoying. And as I don't usually read urban fantasy, I have nothing really to compare it to bookwise or animewise (as I suppose the only other urban fantasy-esque anime I have actually picked up is Hunter x Hunter -- I think I am a much bigger fan of alt history fantasy mango/animu and scifi mango/animu), but I suppose it's just one example of how an otherwise mediocre anime can be much less predictable than books and make characters feel stunningly more human all of a second, almost as if there has been always been a veil between the reader and the character and that it was all of a sudden lifted. I only picked it up because all the characters are named after authors and I was a fan of the art.

I think that some books may approach a redemption-esque trajectory or show more dimensions towards characters who are conventionally evil, but usually only at the very end. And then they tend to have outcomes like a certain GGK novel which makes me feel very angry. It's not the only novel like that, but it bothers me that I have not been surprised in a very long time (and it's not just villain-wise or whether or not I care about the characters) but it's just that there is something essential missing in so many books, some key spark of inspiration or worldbuilding that I used to see before and just isn't there any longer.

This is a bit of a complicated question, but I'm curious if there is any fantasy/other genre works that would fit what is called "chuuni" in Japanese media. What that is, at least as it pertains to written works like visual novels, is a style of action scene which follows along this sort of progression: 1.) heavy info-dumping and exposition that sets up everything that you need to know about what is going on -- the powers of characters and their implications, setting, whatever it may be; 2.) the creation of a situation in which that description is going to be fulfilled; and the final step 3.) something that turns it around and manages to contradict everything that you just read. That may sound stupid but it creates a very entertaining and climactic fight scene when it's done well. An overly simple example might be: 1.) character A has an invincible attack that does [long explanation], 2.) character A attacks character B with said attack, 3.) HOWEVER --- character B manages to get out of it and win regardless because [long explanation]. Hopefully that makes some sort of sense?

I'm not sure where you should start - I started with Mistborn, which is essentially a post-apocalyptic fantasy with a well-defined magic system. Wax and Wayne is a sequel to that series, set in essentially 1800s America

It deteriorates and stagnates at around book five or so if I remember. Incredibly generic but if you like that then I guess it's a decent enough stab at generic fantasy. The gravity of S2 is good but my favourite by far is the Fitzgerald episode. War of the Flowers, by Tad Williams
30-odd Theo is a good muscian stuck in a shit band that hates him. Then his gf miscarries and comes to realise that she doesn't love him anymore, and boots him out of the house. He's forced to move back in with his dying mother. She kicks the bucket, and he inherits her house, plus her cousin's home, where there's a fictionalised biography about said cousin's life, and his travel to a Victorian-like world of fairies.
Meanwhile, in said world of fairie, the powers that be send a dark, body-snatching entity into our world to capture him. Then, one day, after getting drunk off his ass, a 15cm tall mouthy fairie appears and tells him to come with her, right bout the time said monster has tracked him down.
So, yeah, Faerie is not in a great state. They've been forced to modernise, as Titania and Oberon are dead, and without them, no more infinite magic, which is their electricity, the stuff keeps the world running. Said magic is also created by the belief of humns, but faries ain't really believed in no more. In response, power plants literally drain the magic (and life) out of people who get unlucky with the lottery (or volunteer). But even this isn't working too well, as without the belief of humans, there's regular brownouts, and when those happen at the plants, with people plugged in...

David Zindell is best known for his sci-fi novel Neverness. His fantasy books are a really classic feeling and sort of lyrical. Im not gonna overhype the books of which there are four, the first of them being the best in my opinion. To me it was a fair attempt at classic style of fantasy which to me has a lot of heart and the prose isn't half bad. It has a lot of spiritual overtones without becoming tiresome.
seriously underrated in my opinion, maybe it was the horrible US-covers. They look like screens from the 80's Hercules TV-show.
