I tried reading Naked Lunch last year but couldn't get anywhere in it. I would read half a page and then get distracted and not have the words register, requiring myself to backtrack and read it again... it was painful.

I bought Cities of the Red Night last Friday, hopefully it's different.

I remember watching Naked Lunch in '91 when Cronenberg made a movie adaptation of the book, having known nothing about the book beforehand, I was wary about reading it. I can honestly say that this is my favorite book by my favorite author by my favorite role model.

The whole thing was one giant mess. The only thing good about it, and I hope the author meant for this to happen, was that the experience of reading such a pile of wank is meant to be analogous to a junky's condition: going in with high expectations and enjoying the initial feel of it before sinking into a disappointing fuckfest of repetition, pain and disgust, anti-climaxing and fizzling out into nothing, feeling burnt-out and remorseful, realising what a waste of time the whole thing was. I found that in my edition, the history of Burroughs and how he got to writing this was way mroe interesting than reading a text that set out to deliberately obfuscate the fuck out of everything.
