Why do people on /lit/ pretend this is obscure? I've seen this book mentioned numerous times before even coming to /lit/ and seen people describe it as one of the greatest books. It certainly doesn't seem underrated to me, so why do you all pretend it is?

I see people constantly circlejerking on /lit/ about this book, asking why is it so underrated and how happy and superior they feel for knowing about this obscure, underrated book.

Go ask a hundred random people if they've heard of it and I bet none of them will.

Most people haven't heard of Hegel either, doesn't mean he's underrated.

It depends where you are I guess. In middle of nowhere burgerland European lit in general isn’t that well known let alone Austrian. If you’re in New York or San Francisco maybe it’s different. I’m lucky I know people who have heard of Dostoevsky and Tolstoy.

To be fair, you would get that same result if you asked about pretty much any book except the really famous ones in the Western canon or the popular ones like Tolkien or Martin.

I just read the first ~800 pages. It broke me. I don't feel like writing anymore
