As for the rest of the controversy, the Paul Made It Up camp makes a positive claim based on “Jesus never x” or “Paul never x” arguments. When presented with evidence that Jesus did in fact x, the bar for what counts as evidence moves. An example is “Jesus never called himself God.” When pointed to Mark 14:61-62 and the usage of I AM, or any of Jesus’s other acts that, to any Jew, would have made him coequal with God (forgiving sins, calming storms, etc.), it means that there’s a “synoptic problem” and that Paul somehow changed the Gospels that also somehow refute him. See how it works?
