Was he right about revolution and the social function of art?

This guy is no fun incarnated. Also: he didn't produce neither great art nor great science, so he is useless.

Don't waste your time with him.

Ah, clever dialectic reversal. So what do you think his great aesthetic contribution is? Minima Moralia? And for science? Negative dialectical spin on historical materialism?

I dislike critics as they influence the masses to an extent even they don't imagine.
And they're never really subversive, as only their convenient ideas emerge to the surface and get instantly integrated into the system.

as a middle class jewish male intellectual in the 20th century, Adorno could technically lay claim to being othered and discriminated, but that doesn't keep him from being a shitty person who obviously had issues with women, black people and queer people. It's so blatant. When cishet white male leftists criticise 'consumerism' most of the time it is barely disguised bigotry and resentiment at a popular culture that for the first time in history refuses to pander exclusively to people who look like them. Popular culture is far more empowering, diverse and participative than whatever goes by high culture these days. The alt right has appropriated the discourse of anti consumerism with memes like 'soiiboy' 'clownworld' so that is enough to make one question whether that discourse was originally progressive in the first place.

>‘Even if it focuses on the totality of modern, urban society, Adorno’s philosophy remains limited in a bourgeois-European way, and is thus provincial. The philosopher who in his writings described the inadequacy of the thought that identifies as essentially a problem of language, and who committed critical thought to reflection, was far too insensitive and unreflective as far as his own language was concerned to notice the implicit racism it contained. Adorno’s not liking jazz and so criticising it can be shrugged off as aestheticism or a judgement of personal taste, but that he spoke without ado about the “Blacks”, whenever he meant jazz musicians, the ‘jazz subjects’, must either count as reactionary (a ban on jazz) or uncritical (stupidity). Nothing confirms so clearly how Adorno blindly took over the racist cliché, as the following sentence: “I have no prejudice against the Blacks; they distinguish themselves in no way from the Whites, other than in their skin colour.” Adorno obviously completely ignored the enormous influence of African and Afro-American culture on European modernism.’

Adorno’s homophobia is prototypical of a larger tendency in his work: To fear, shun, mock, and mope about the Other, whether it’s gays, non-intellectuals, jazz fans, women, etc., etc. He doesn’t look upon the Other as a possibly viable alternative, or one he might learn something from: It is simply a threat, and one that has already done enough damage to his world (which had the potential to be the best of all possible worlds, I guess!), and which needs to be neutralized.

you only ever hear white guys talking about the spectacle and the culture industry, why? because people of color and trans and queer folks have life or death issues to worry about.

You could use the structure of this inane little discourse of yours to argue that Doritos/McDonald's/Coke is likewise the most democratic, nutritious (yes you'd slip that in there or heavily imply it due to your ideological leaps), and inclusive food--due to its prevalence and wide demographic consumer base across races, economics, and global territories--and therefore the best.

But, if it were something so obvious as corporate junkfood you'd actually be advocating making better food, and better education regarding nutrition, accessible to everyone. And you'd be criticising just what economic or even political interests benefit from marketing this 'inclusive' junkfood.

Interesting how you do the exact opposite when it comes to corporate, facile culture.

He doesn’t use data to confirm his views; it's all pure opinion, thus highly suspicious.

Why he doesn’t use data? Because is far easier to sit on your office reading and come up with theories to massage your own ego and feel creative and useful. It would take much more work, effort, and time to actually go on to the field to study every aspect of your theory, to collect information, to make interviews, to risk having your opinions disproven.

He is absolutely right. Reading Adorno should feel like putting on the glasses from They Live, at least where the culture industry is concerned. Honestly it's a bit terrifying.

He is, to some extent, wrong about jazz though, probably based primarily on racist attitudes towards black people, general dislike of Americans and American culture, and having a limited understanding of jazz's philosophy. Glaring part of his views on aesthetics that has not aged very well.

>He is, to some extent, wrong about jazz though, probably based primarily on racist attitudes towards black people

When he wrote that jazz was a white thing and all the major personalities were white. Adorno was a kike, which is why he held that anti-white attitude. And his whole purpose was to shift attention away from his fellow jews creating much of the low culture and direct animus toward "capitalism," which is what most plebs still believe, so mission accomplished.

To understand Adorno, one must understand the JQ first.
