What are the point of shelf threads? I imagine it is something similar to pic related. Posting an image in order to get people to pat you on the back and say something akin to, "That'll do Babe. That'll do," making you feel warm and pleasantly startled in your navel.

Partly the hope of discussion and/or recommendations and/or recognition in regards to the books presented therein, but also, and mostly, more having to do with the same kind of online braggery as when a man posts pictures on Facebook of a large fish he caught or the silly expensive car he bought.

This is the only reason I browse and post in shelf threads. I like to see what books different from mine other people have purchased. It helps expand my list of potential authors/reads. Sadly though most pictures aren't in focus enough or hi-res enough to clearly make out titles.
