Principles of Neuroscience, about 1500 pages in the new edition, is easy to understand and a really solid report on science of mind from the small reductionistist parts to the psychology of mind to even a bit of neural networks. I got it because I wanted to learn about memory and mental facilities so I could exploit them better. Overall, I think its really eye opening to learn about ourselves as a physical machine since it really analyzes things we take for granted and dont think about.

Tiling patterns I got last week and havent read much of. It is apparently thr gold standard and emphasies visual geometry over abstract proofs.

Missed this. I've already read Moby-Dick and a few of his piazza tales and a smattering of his poetry. Ars longa, vita brevis...I think I'll be able to make do without further context. I'm also particularly interested, given that Pierre was written only about a year after Moby-Dick, in his continuation of particular themes from Moby-Dick from what little I read of Pierre in my first attempt, e.g.:
>Ah, now the face departs. Pray heaven it hath not only stolen back, and hidden again in thy high secrecies, oh, tree! But ’tis gone — gone — entirely gone; and I thank God, and I feel joy again; joy, which I also feel to be my right as man; deprived of joy, I feel I should find cause for deadly feuds with things invisible. Ha!

It's pretty tough to tell from just seeing them smoke. The notable deviations are found in the speech patterns and affectations. Crystal whores are neat to watch because they have an affectation whereby they run their fingers through their hair as part of a full body undulation; typically with one foot anchored while the other half of the body is engaged in violent spasms.

Economics is one of the fields where it is easy to get trapped in ideology. Try to free yourself of that the best you can before you start. Give yourself a brief overview of all of the meme economists:
>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ludwig_von_Mises
>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Sowell
Toss in a little:
>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dialectic#Hegelian_dialectic
>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fractional-reserve_banking
Take a peek at the feet on the ground:
and also:
You do not need to bust your balls on Kapital - just get the feel for it. Take a peek at the Germans to see how little more than Economic Marxism their original plan was:
and also Hitler because, though he was a shit economist, he managed to keep things patched decently while everything was collapsing:
If you can wade through these for free then you should be primed to ask more questions and develop your own direction. If you choose to be an ideologue at this point then at least you will be a good one. Here is the one gem that I will give you:
>We Bankers by Andrae Nordskog
Good luck finding it. This is the only solid piece that I have ever seen on the relationship between individual banks and The Federal Reserve. All of these free wikis will get you to top level pseud tier. The rest is up to you.

>Oldfags:
compared to you, yeah

>do you regret getting into reading?
i learned to read when i was 3-4 years old and i haven't stopped since. there has never been a point where i have "got into" reading. i can no more stop reading than i can stop breathing.

>Do you feel that you have missed life opportunities (social, sexual, fiscal, spiritual, etc.) due to your interest in reading?
no of course not
well maybe once. i had just started dating a black girl who claimed to be into reading. the truth was she was only into reading black woes stories like toni morrison, chinua achebe etc. the first time she came to my place she looked around my bookcases and we had a big argument because i don't have any of that kind of thing. i'm pretty sure it cut short our relationship.

depends what you read
non-fiction- i learned enough about investing etc that i am now reasonably well off and only work when i want to. i also read a lot of books related to my work.

I don't know if I'm much of an oldfag since I turned 18 right around when lit was created and knew nothing about literature or most authors being mentioned.

No I don't regret it, There's a certain magic that comes with reading something like Kafka or Joyce at the age of around 17 - 21, Where you're just mature enough to appreciate it and just young enough for it to spark the imagination and leave a lasting impression.

What i do regret is using reading as a crutch to not doing anything really in my 20s, not seeking out an interesting friends group, not going to all the concerts I could have, and even then i haven't read enough to remotely justify it in that time.

I'm the second from the last that you tagged.

Of course I don't regret getting into reading and I can't say that I don't know if I've ever met anyone that has regretted it.

I've married my high school sweetheart (both cringe and awesome depending on the day, haha), so I've often wondered what I've missed, particularly when reading some of these characters in the likes of Hemingway, Kerouac, even Murakami, but I don't regret it. I'd say being with the same woman the entire time would have more of an effect on missed opportunities than reading. If I could do it all over again getting ready to turn 30, 10/10 I would do the exact same thing though.

I went to school for English and I'm a technical writer for a company that makes motor coaches. Pretty lucky considering how I got into it. It pays very well, but my wife makes more as a financial something-or-other for a big corporate entity. Difference is that I enjoy my job and I enjoy (read as it being slightly fulfilling) having a tangible product that people legitimately read, even if it's maintenance procedures for big-assed buses. However, I went to school for English because if I was going to spend tens of thousands of dollars on something, it was going to be something that I legitimately enjoyed. I never thought twice about a career related to it (I was more than okay with a menial job as long as the job enabled me to do the things that I enjoy). I never thought I was going to be an author or anything; the starving artist style of life doesn't really appeal to me. Like I said, I've gotten lucky and had something resembling success - I graduated in 2017 and I'll have my student loans paid off the beginning of next year. We own and house and two cars and have hobbies, so I can't complain.

My week is basically a 40 hour 8-5, come home and do house shit, cook, eat, and then either read, play games, or watch something on TV (thank fucking GOD Game of Thrones is done after this weekend, she's been dragging my ass through that for far too long now). Weekends I typically go fishing, and every other weekend I run a game of Starfinder with a few friends. Of course there's family shit spattered everywhere in the middle.

The biggest thing I think I've gotten out of reading, which is basically the cliche of readers, is I find myself far more empathetic than a lot of people. I also have a few friends that have similar tastes, so good conversations is always a benefit.

I don't mean to sound snarky, but it totally fucking baffles me that people pride themselves on reading books (not that you do, just speaking generally here, kind of referring to /r/books). Reading is not that big of a deal in defining a person as people think it is. I have great friends that haven't read anything and some of the biggest dipshits I've ever met are walking libraries.

I mean, just look at me. I'm just, like, a regular dude. I like stuff. Part of that stuff is reading.

Nah. It's goofy to say but I think this is the thing I'm built to do. Reading may not be "useful" but I don't live to be useful. It's grown my inner life tremendously. It's shown me ways of thinking, and that's what I value.

I'm actually more or less retired but I work in a car wash. All my shit's paid off. House, car, everything. I work like 35 hours a week, I sleep in every day, and my work is simple and doesn't get in the way of what I like to do.

I am not married, but I've been in a steady relationship for the last five years.

God no I hate kids.

My life is basically a weekend. I play music, hang out with friends, cook, garden, travel when I can. Just simple shit really.

I’m a paper pusher for the federal gov. I am not married and kind of a loser. I only made a living wage for the first time last September.

I think everyone fears they’ve missed out on something once they get older. I guess I also feel that way, but idk, I don’t like most people.

Reading, writing, and analysis are very helpful. Unfortunately they usually aren’t the main things that land you a job, but they’re usually required to advance. Posters on here often glorify the life of the mind or rag on it and its pretensions, but learning how to think is very important.

>Do you have children?
Yes. Twin girls and a boy.

>What do an average weekday and an average weekend look like in your present life?
I get more done by the time most people wake up than they will the entire day. Especially on weekends. Which means I'm home from work in the afternoon in time to meet my kids and hang out with them.

>What have you gotten out of reading, tangibly, outside of entertainment and maybe being slightly better spoken?
Reading makes you a better writer, too, for what it's worth. That's something that doesn't seem like it's a hugely important life skill because of the disparagement we tend to heap on English and Writing majors. But writing well is the single most important skill you'll develop in your life. If you don't write well, you won't do well.

When my wife spotted me for the first time I was sitting in front of a Turkish coffee place in Erbil, reading -- not a joke -- Walden. She thought it was pretty absurd to see someone reading a book about being an idle aristocrat in New England in the 1800s while sipping Turkish coffee in the middle of a war. She thought the juxtaposition hilarious and figured I was cute enough to make trying to talk to me a worthwhile risk. We've been married for 13 years now.

I read Walden again every few years to see how Thoreau and I are keeping. He lost me somewhere around 28 and I honestly couldn't tell you if it was my own growing cynicism or his lack of a wife and kids to center him.

I know I need to branch out from fiction, and a lot of my collection is pretty generic, but I'm really happy with my bookshelf. I got probably 80% of these from thrift shops, and that allowed me to get a nice variety of editions and formats from different publishers and eras, which I'm really happy with, vs. only getting new Penguin paperbacks or something. I definitely wouldn't be able to afford getting all of these new, so Value Village has been great. Anyone looking for cheaper books should check out thrift shops, you'd be surprised what you can find in the right areas.

Ask me how I know you are retarded. Honestly only specialists need to read primary sources (Plutarch has a lot of problems btw), and if anything without being a specialist you will get a lot of things wrong when only reading primary sources unless you have access to the fields specialized journals and know all the cross work. That is the whole point of reading a specialists book. So you don’t have to spend a masters degree worth of work + 5 years to become a specialist, which you will NOT be able to do in more than 1 or two fields.
of course there is a still a big gap between reading a good history book that cites lots of sources by someone in the field and a pop undergrad quality book.
