What is the point of this book? Does it get better? Read about one third of it and still nothing is happening.

It's shit, just like most German literature.

I can't read it. Mann's writing style for some reason is incredibly annoying for me.

Unironically, why is German literature so bad?

I assume that anon is referring to how most Germanic lit is lit of the mind or of ideas (like the Magic Mountain). The emphasis is more often on ideas and discussions between characters than action.

Why didn't Mann write philosophy instead of novels then?

I recently finished it and it was a crawl over the finish line however the final chapters are really something and I have thought about the themes and motifs of the book a lot since I finished it last month. I also read a few reviews and discussions about the book since and it has made a lot more sense to me. The most important and most interesting parts of the book are basically anything with Ludovico settembrini, especially his debates with naphta. If you really don't enjoy it right now maybe you should just call it quits however I'm glad I stuck it out

Do you have any other experiences with Mann? Magic Mountain is the first thing book by him that I read and maybe it was a bad place to start. Can you recommend something? (I'm OP btw, just on my phone right now).
