If you are dead set on kindle then it's well worth the money to bump up to a paperwhite vs. the standard, purely because of the nicer screen.

>> No.13110816

>>13110808
Yeah if I get one id be the paperwhite but are they better than physical books?

>> No.13110862

I still prefer a physical book but it is a lot cheaper. Follow /r/ebookdeals. Most of what's posted there is crap, but there a few posters who put up deals on good stuff. Yeah I know plebbit, but it's actually good for niche and limited time things like sales. Over the last 2 years, i've managed to collect a pretty sizeable collection of good books, mostly from $1.99 and $2.99 sales

Why would you buy an ereader and then actually continue spending money on books?

>> No.13110897

>>13110816
I prefer them to physical because they're easier to hold but in terms of eye strain and comprehension I haven't noticed a difference.

The ease of reading on an ereader is great. Making notes digitally is awesome. The fact that you can get any book you want for free and carry a library of hundreds of books around effortlessly makes them superior, IMO. I love having physical books but ereaders make more sense in every way beyond liking the look of books and the aesthetic of it. (feeling, turning pages, etc)

Just use libgen senpai

>> No.13111599

I got my Paperwhite today and I'm loving it. It reads nicely and manga looks better than I thought. I don't plan on buying ebooks and I won't stop buying physical ones, but it'll be good to read books I don't wanna buy or to read books I own but don't wanna carry with me. I'll still use my tablet for reading textbooks tho.

Depends on what you read. For reference works or anything with a lot of diagrams/photos/etc. they're generally pretty lousy but for prose they're fucking incredible.

I watched a review of the latest top of the range Paperwhite and it's almost exactly as slow and laggy as the first e-readers from 10 years ago.
That's kinda depressing.
Plus the entry level readers are still expensive with nothing usable under $100.

I'm about to buy a used 4th gen kindle for about £20 or so. I remember people saying you could read PDFs on it but you had to modify it first. How do I do that? Also, how does manga look on a 4th gen kindle? Is it high enough resolution to read on it?

Technically you can, but it won't be fun.
You need EPUB (or MOBI if you're using a Kindle).

i read my epubs on my phone

It can read PDFs but it won't format the text or flow right. You can zoom in to PDFs like an image and scroll around if but it'd more trouble than its worth. Alternatively there are was to convert PDFs to epub or other formats which I have done with varied success.

I have basically never been able to convert a pdf to epub or mobi such that the result was readable. Calibre is still pretty good though
If you want to read pdfs you need to buy a 10 or 13 inch e-ink device or a tablet. Tablets work well.
Jailbreaking a kindle is good if you wanna install epub reader software. People say epub is a lot better than mobi but I've never had much of an issue with either.

I love mine. Only touch screen sucks (as opposed to the page turn buttons on my old K4), but the light works great for reading at night. It's the only way to read fiction.

Also, you can totally turn off the progress bar at the bottom, which is a new experience for me. You can read a book without knowing how far you are from the end, which reduces the subconscious assumptions you make about structure and pacing.

idk about the quality of that model itself, but i have a paperwhite from whatever and it is very convenient: it fits in a big pocket, carries hundreds of books, i can read in the dark pretty comfy, one click and the dictionary opens with the meaning of that word, etc.
i still prefer physical when im home in "the mood" you know? but ereader is great to have and cheaper if you have no problems pirating books.

>>13112272
literally all undergrad and grad lvl physics and math text books are in libgen. idk about other areas but id bet you can find at least the most popular

>>13112982
download the program calibre, it manages your files and automatically convert from epub/mobi to whatever format you need. books you get on genesis library.

>>13114495
this. pdf is hit or miss on ereaders. i hate it. just use a tablet or laptop for those.

also this.
if you have the money for an ereader, specially with background light, it is very worth it.

I have become accustomed to the Kindle's major advantage over paper books: pressing a word and having a quick wiki definition pop up, this convenience is so much better than having to dick around on a phone or computer, it keeps you immersed in the material. That's a bigger plus than I thought it'd be and worth it for that alone.

They are better in most ways. I you want to leave a library to your offspring then no. Also keep in mind that a tablet is more universal. These are only for books, i know they have web-browsers but it's almost not usable. They will run for a bunch of weeks on a single charge though.

Ah, yeah, I knew about that but I was thinking more like history books or auto/biographies and non-fiction that isn't really text books.
