Could someone guide me on how I could understand Christian theology in a broad sense? I dont want to misunderstand western literature and also I don't want to read the holy bible in its entirety. What are the most important books within bible for this purpose? I am also thinking about supplementing it with reading Mere Christianity by CS Lewis. Any help would be appreciated.

Hey I have a rec for you, it's a book called Jesus son of men by Khalil Gibran. It's not exactly what you asked for as it's not broad theology as it's focused in the life of Jesus. But if you want to undertand the whole 'Jesus' thing this is a great source and also a great piece of literature.

I get your sentiment, but considering it's the greatest book ever composed, you might consider READING IT IN ITS ENTIRETY.

I do hope someday I'll read the bible cover to cover but I want to read serious literature and my attempts at reading the bible haven't gone much farther than genesis. Its shameful that I'm looking for a short cut, but I have to.

Psalms, Isaiah, Job, Jonah, Matthew John, all the Pauline epistles.

That's probably a couple hundred pages, very doable.

>Genesis
Dude, DO NOT start with Genesis, start with the New Testament, the first 4 gospels. After them you can either keep going into NT, or start over with Genesis and it will make more sense.
I get it you're not looking for faith, so all I can recommend is you watch some youtube theologians who explain certain aspects about the Bible, like how Genesis is a metaphoric poem about human nature and not factual history or how Noah's Arc has symbolic meanings in the numerical specs. of how it should be built.
I can recommend two channels. Seedbed and InspiringPhilosophy. They take the Bible apart in a rational manner, not the generic "muh believe eve ate a fruit 6k years ago and be baptised and know +999 sacrament laws or else you'll go to hell and be made into soup by the devil"

genesis is fine ONLY if you have been based and replied on ancestral sin. original sin is the basic understanding of most american neo-pagans tho

Ratzinger’s Introduction to Christianity is incredible, but it assumes some basic background knowledge. If you vaguely know the Bible and know the major movements in the history of ideas you’ll be fine.
