Poor Benjamin, didn't know a manuscript was lost with him.
The Gogol one used to really tear me up after I experienced the beauty of Dead Souls but later my russian lit prof told me that he went kind of insane and the parts of Dead Souls he burned, judging by what we have left, weren't nearly on the same level as the first.

Not "lost" but Kafka dying before he could finish The Castle is another great literary tragedy, was shaping up to be his best work.
