What are the essential works, and best translations?

>> No.13076039

Senecas Letters is the best work to begin with undoubtedly

>> No.13076051

if you haven't read any philosophy before, read modern texts on the stoics first to gain a sense of context before you get lost in the ancient writing

>he needs someone to tell him to control his emotions
Pathetic.

Start with you responsibilities, anon.

Ignore other comments, read Meditations by Marcus Aurelius.

Because your ass came out of the womb a well-read Neo.

You don’t have to be well-read. If you don’t intuitively know that getting angry over something out do your control, then you’re hardly different from a chimp. Stoicism is for brainlets, period. I’m fine with that, because if that’s what it takes to make people act virtuously, then fine, read it, but don’t call yourself a capital “S” Stoic as if that means anything.

Looking into a philosophy to have a better understanding of the world and different viewpoints, does not mean that I desire to make it my own. I might read Christian literature at the same time as Bertrand Russel, but that doesn't mean I will call myself a Atheistic Christian. Take your assuming ass back to the stack thread you crept out of, and hinder my curiosity no further.

Stoicism isn't just about controlling your emotions.

Ironic because that is a stoic insult. Get thee to a nunnery!

You wouldn't go wrong with Seneca's Letters. They're instructive and crafted around teaching practical philosophical principles to the novice.

The well-advised start with Seneca.

for real, what happened to you to make you so angry about a person in this current age wanting to read about a pretty comfy and austere tradition?

How convenient of a thread. I have a question about meditations by marcus aurelius. After some reading, it seems that the Hays translation is appropriate for myself. However, I have noticed there are at least two 'meditations' by this translator.

1 Meditations ISBN: 9780679642602
2 Mod Lib Meditations ISBN: 9780812968255

Anybody know what the main differences are? I am unaware of what "mod lib" means, even after some quick searching about.

>mod lib
It's short for Modern Library which is the publisher. The covers are different, but I think the content is pretty much the same.
