I am feeling very maudlin about opening my own used book store in the future. It's all I want from life. I hope to make it possible one day. Hell I wouldn't care if I went into dire straits trying to realize this dream. To just be surrounded by books and having customers come in to browse, trade, and talk about books would be enough.

It almost certainly won't be successful, unless you're lucky enough to live in a university town. Do something else for money, then be surrounded by books and bookish friends at home.

He is right. Maybe it is something I will attempt when I am much older, like retirement.

No reason he can't move to a university town. This idea is a lot easier in Europe I've heard. Having a place with cheap books owned/staffed by someone who loves books is a fucking god-send. You can legit become a third place if you do it right.

This image gets spammed here all the time. I'm almost positive it's in Chicago. I've been there plenty of time. it's at clark and belmont. It's actually not that great. there's a much bigger one, that looks close to this, in Chicago, Wicker Park

The owner of a bookstore doesn't sit and enjoy himself, he works to make ends meet. You won't read any more than average working person. Unless you're going to become a penniless down-shifter, or coming into an inheritance you don't mind spending, you'll be running a business round the clock.

So you've got a trust fund and you want to lose $10,000 a month?
