According to this guy you're the smartest board on 4chan.
Congrats.

Nah, there are very few writerfags around here. We just read shit. Or pretend to read shit and then pretend to discuss it, so that our anonymous personae appear more well-read to other anonymous personae. Not unlike Camelot, it is a silly place.

There's a certain tier list that at one point was being posted every single day, by the same person. It's blatantly obvious to anyone with more than half a braincell that it's a troll list, but it ALWAYS gets at least several dozens of replies. /lit/ is one of the easiest boards to troll, probably because people who come here don't really wonder off onto the other boards.

We really are lucky to be /lit/izens.

The trolls are at least semi-intelligent.

The trolling is often times ignored and kept to a minimum.

In other words, WE ARE THE SMARTEST BOARD IN THE CESSPOOL OF IGNORANCE THAT IS 4CHAN FUCK YEAH!

Trolling on /lit/:

Green is not adequately defined as "the color that a lime is", because it doesn't overcome the problem of individual perception.

In other words, we can both agree a lime is green, but we have no way of knowing if 'my' green is 'your' green.

>> No.1306469

I'm not going to say we're not smart, but I will say that, per capita, /lit/ is the most trolled board on 4chan. We're the kind of intelligent that knows a lot of things, but couldn't find its ass with both hands, and still thinks it's hot shit. Not a thread goes by when constructive discussion isn't undermined by idiots or trolls. All it takes is one faggot with a name drop and a glittering generality, and we all dogpile onto the thread derailment.

I'd like to make an addendum to this anon's post.
This is NOT the "oh dude what if like, we all see different colors but we've been conditioned to like, call them all by certain names. like that chair is blue but for you is red but we both call it blue" or any of that. That has already been disproven.

What he IS talking about is, for example, similar shades of green. To some people a shade of green might seem like yellow instead of the shade of green you define as still being green.

science has objectively defined colors by the use of light waves. we may see them as different but that is because of our own subjectivity. still a green lime is a green lime because of the light waves that bounce off of it

I used to have a pair of grey jeans that I loved until everybody told me they were green and I threw them out. Green jeans suck.

>> No.1306510

This phenomenon has been examined scientifically while testing the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis. Two groups of people, one set of English speakers, and another Zuni speakers (who have one word for both green and blue), were asked to identify a variety of colors. The Zuni had more trouble remembering shades for which they had no name than English speakers who did, but both were quite capable of recognizing the difference between the shades, and seemed to classify them mentally in the same way.

What this means for discourse is that the perception of colors is not subjective, but the way that one talks about them may be. In conversation, one need only occasionally clarify what one means by "blue" or "green" to be able to discuss them clearly.
tl;dr: Language games of the type played on /lit/ are common, but don't display true perceptual subjectivity.

>> No.1306513

>>1306504
Indeed, but for people who are not well-versed in the exact name of each color and their shades, there is still room for their subjectivity, so they can say what they consider yellow and what they consider green
