What's a good place to start with Mishima?

I have a copy of Temple of Dawn around the place but couldn't get into it

temple of dawn is the third part of his magnum opus. the order of it is: spring snow - runaway horses - temple of dawn - decay of the angel

I actually think Confessions of a Mask is a great entry point. You should also watch the film Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters, because it is probably the best biopic of all time.

Why would you read someone cowardly enough to kill themselves?

That's not a good place to start for this reason >>13061216. The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea or The Temple of the Golden Pavilion are better places to start; stand alone works, relatively short, that expose most of MIshima's ideals (japan/west, virility/feminity, beauty/ugliness, blood and violence).

Patriotism is very short and gets right to the heart of what Mishima is all about

>> No.13064580

I recommend Death in Midsummer which you can get in a short works anthology with Patriotism and other stuff; however, the best place to start is probably Temple of the Golden Pavilion.

>> No.13064592

Death in Midsummer. It has a bit of everything.
