Look at all the writers that you think are great. You'll come to realize that there is a certain fire burning inside of them

Depends what you mean by obsession.

Joyce would spend an entire day on a single sentence sometimes, 8 hours worrying over a single sentence. Many great writers have read their favorite books a ridiculous amount of times, much more than your average well-adjusted person ever would. McCarthy read some 300 books just for research to write Blood Meridian. I think if you look into the biographies of the writers who have stood the test of time, more often than not they possess obsessive personality traits.

ugh, I hate writers that do extensive "research" for their novels, it's extremely cringe and their books always suck

Read The Lime Works by Thomas Bernhard. All obsession does is seal you off from the world, inhibit your productivity and will eventually lead to you popping a bullet in the back of your wife's brain

He's mocking you for valuing beauty because he views it as gauche, akin to layman scientism, that your appreciation of aesthetics is an embarrassing affectation. Anybody who disdains the pursuit of truth and beauty, though, however mawkish that pursuit can be in its early stages, should be peremptorily shot.
