Just wondering - what does /lit/ think of manga? I know it is /a/'s thing, but does anyone in /lit/ think of any particular manga for worthwhile reading or as masterpieces?

Pic related - it's manga

Bokurano. Only the manga, the anime and "novel" sound shit.

>> No.1302351

I quite like Death Note and Code Geass as thriller series.

Apart from that, I only watch dumb action and comedy anime - turn-your-brain-off viewing. It's pretty fun.

I read the first Barefoot Gen. I really liked it.

Also, for an awesome cartoon, read some Jason. I'm forever plugging him on this board.

Pic related, it's a Jason comic.

They're also slowly releasing DVD versions.
There aren't many anime series worth watching, but I'd (re)watch the shit out of this like Bebop or MSG.

Naoki Urasawa up in this bitch. True baller.

Although I think he's not yet written anything up to his full potential... his work tends a little to meandering. Lacks focus sometimes. Dude is a genius, though.

Some worthwhile ones are Sexy Voice and Robo, Nasu, Soil, Blade of the Immortal, Pluto, Monster, anything by Inio Asano, and Planetes. Those are the only ones I'd consider on par with some of my favorite books, though a few I just read for fairly mindless fun.

Cowboy Bebop (the anime) was decent at first. Turned to shit around the time they found Ed, though.

Yeah, I figured you weren't implying it yourself, but every time I hear a "literary critic" say something along those lines it's just... safe to the point that it's absolutley meaningless. Come on, try some stuff no one's really made a statement about yet.

>> No.1303126

I read Lone Wolf and A Cub, actually I didn't read only that one, but its a perfect example so I'll go with it.

For first couple of books (?), it was awesome. Great story, character and art. Then when story arc was finishing, it all went to hell. Main character became hearless killing machine and story just dropped dead. It was obvious that author just kept the story going for the sake of sales. I got the same exact fealing from all the other manga that I read.

lone wolf and cub is easily kazuo koike's most boring work, tho

The anime. The film will likely have Ed from the beginning and it will also likely lose the charm of the setting that the anime had in the early episodes.

I thought Lain was good. FLCL is okay.
>That's a fair few right there.
Half of those aren't really worth watching though.
I meant that there aren't many (as a percentage) worth watching in the sea of moeblob, romantic comedy, harem, wish-fulfillment, magical girl, and Naruto clone shit. You can obviously find some good or decent stuff of course.
>>1303009
Looks fine. Nice to see you have Haibane Renmei.
>>1303070
I disagree. It was good throughout.
>>1303078
The movie takes place somewhere in the middle of the series. It'd be better to watch the anime.
>>1303082
The Rose of Versailles is excellent.

>bumping a non-/lit/ discussion to piss everyone off

Thought this was about manga not anime. I like a weird variety of manga genres. I like Cat Street which is a slice-of-life storyline but with social outcasts, Eyeshield 21 which is about football (which I hate with a passion) but it makes football seem EPIC and it's a really funny series, or Please Save My Earth which is a little bit cliche but is an amazing story about people reincarnated and dealing with both of their lives and the conflicts that they bring.

That's just a few. In terms of anime, there's groundbreaking stuff like Utena, Gankutsuou (though it's just a retelling of Monte Cristo), and Paranoia Agent. There's visionaries in all forms of media and I try to seek them out without showing prejudice to an entire form of expression.

Gunjo, Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Black Jack, Claudine, Strawberry Shake Sweet, and while not great I also like Fujieda Miyabi's stuff.
