13003039 No.13003039 [Reply] [Original]

There is nothing beautiful left in the world. Man has lost his myths as the cult of science tries to codify everything. The culture is garbage, literature is dying, art is dying, etc. Everything has been commodified and if you try to oppose the system your actions are subsumed by the system. There are no limits to anything anymore, there is no radicality left, there is no meaning in terrorism as death has lost its meaning. Sex has lost its mystery as the world has been flooded by pornography. This culture of hyper-individuality has turned everyone against themselves, everyone explloits himself. Mental illness has been unpoliticized and are taught that we own our mental illness and it is our own fault and the mental illness industry dopes us on drugs. Teenangers being depressed is apparently normal in this society. There is no more community, there is no more family, we all live in arrangements and are taught that the corporation has a soul.

We are born into this time and must bravely follow the path to the destined end. There is no other way. Our duty is to hold on to the lost position, without hope, without rescue, like that Roman soldier whose bones were found in front of a door in Pompeii, who, during the eruption of Vesuvius, died at his post because they forgot to relieve him. That is greatness. That is what it means to be a thoroughbred. The honorable end is the one thing that can not be taken from a man.

Here’s a quote straight from Calvino addressing how and why he wrote Invisible Cities:

“ited much of the Far East. For the Orient is nowadays a topic which is best left to experts; and I am not one. But throughout the centuries there have been poets and writers who have drawn their inspiration from II Milione, as an ex- otic and fantastic stage setting: Coleridge in his famous poem, Kafka in The Emperor's Message, Dino Buzzati in his novel The Desert of Tartars. Only the Thousand and One Nights can boast a similar success - that of an imaginary continent in which other literary works find space for their own particular worlds: con- tinents of the 'elsewhere," now that there is no longer any
'elsewhere" in the world, and the whole world is becoming more and more uniform (and for the worse).
In my Invisible Cities, Kubla Khan is a melancholy ruler who realizes that his boundless power is of little worth because the world is going rapidly downhill. Marco Polo is a visionary traveller who tells the Khan tales of impossible cities - for example, a cobweb-city suspended over the abyss, or a microscopic city which gradually spreads out until one realizes that it is made up of lots and lots of concentric cities which are all expanding.”

What's the point of absolute beauty if I am not worthy of its company. I appreciate the beauty by appropriating it, since it's me the viewer who attaches the beauty to a sight with the peculiarities of my perception. Thus no beauty is unworthy of my company, that is until I meet a person so perfect they deny my existence simply by existing themselves. They possess their own beauty so I cannot appropriate it, but still I see their beauty and cannot deny it either. It serves as an external measure for my own existence, and its measurement is mortal, for this beauty I cannot attain. As such I can only destroy it or be destroyed myself.

Giacomo Leopardi

"You, Ariosto, meanwhile, were born to sweet
dreams, and the primal sun, shone
on your face, carefree singer of love and arms,
who filled life with happy illusions,
in an age less sad than ours:
Italy’s new hope. O chambers, O towers,
O ladies, O cavaliers,
O gardens, O palaces, thinking of you,
my mind is lost in a thousand
empty pleasures. Vanities, lovely follies,
and strange thoughts,
filled human life: what remains, now the leaves
are stripped from things? Only the certainty
of seeing all is empty, except sadness. "

>Why would you yield to your need to destroy it? Is your existence so arrogant that you can't conceive of there existing anything beyond own deservedness?

I think when you abstract an everyday practical situation into a philosophical setting you take away certain possibilities in outcomes and in turn add new restrictions on reasoning. All while falsely convincing yourself that you have broadened your freedoms of thought by modelling the situation in an abstracted setting. But that really what you are doing, you are "modelling". The engineers explicitly put bounds on their predictions of " model behaviour " and explicitly characterize the limits of their model and how it may differ from reality. The economists also do this, but the philosopher's seem to forget this tiny yet essential part.
>for example you took a simple situation of two people interacting through infatuation and abstracted it into a setting where the outcomes of the actions if one of them is essentially either to engage in a pursuit to possess the woman or to try and kill her.
>how come your reasonings inside of your "philosophical model" don't have other outcomes. One, say, where the guy simply acknowledges he is too much of a retard for her to waste her life on. A lot of other people surely will cherish her, love her and protect her. And a lot of cases in which she needn't have to put up with retarded nonsense like this guy. So isn't it possible that the guy simply chooses to not pursue her while still acknowledging her 'beauty'?
Why does your philosophical model not cover this cowardice?

>isn't this the same line of thinking that leads to "If I can't have her then no one should be able to" nonsense?
Not quite. It's not her being a perfect beauty that infuriates me, but her being a perfect human on top of that. I would gladly enjoy one or the other, but her being both at the same time transforms her into some microcosm of happiness where laymen, particularly me, cannot enter. A physical manifestation of what I was denied, of what every human is denied. Imperfection is the nature of humans, so the mere existence of a perfect human shits all over me. Good news, however, is that her being perfect is a mere illusion that you cannot, and probably don't need to, see through, but which my inquisitive eye full of jealousy would readily dispel. Looks like I won't have to dirty my hands after all.

Anyway, my "reasoning" is more of a rhetorical and expressive tool, don't take it too close.

If you're a spiritual person, be one anon. I am, or at least try to be. I used to also rail against the so-called "cult of science", because I was too short-sighted to recognize all the immeasurable value that science has into the world, and continues to. I am now trying to actually educate myself on this most brilliant of systems, and am trying to reconcile it with my own personal spiritual beliefs, which pertain to the realms of pantheism, consciousness, idealism and so on. Don't be a fool, like I was. If consciousness is fundamental, and not emergent from the body, then reality's nature is inherently spiritual, and everything science studies is a part of that reality, and something any spiritual individual should know of. Yes, scientific materialism might be a system bereft of meaning to any spiritually inclined soul, yet you have no obligation to believe in it or follow it - so why let yourself be affected by it? And there are plenty of budding resources out there which aim to bridge science and spirituality, like the channels on Youtube called "science and nonduality" and ones in the related sections, which you can read into and find a reconciliation of modern scientific doctrine, and ancient spiritual ones. If you're an Abrahamic, and want to believe in the related mythologies as being literally true of reality, then you might have a harder time - but even this you can do, if you personally choose to. The point is, you don't have to care about what the society around you is up to - simply follow your soul without worry for what the prevailing paradigm might be. And again, please don't be so foolish like I was, to hate on the greatest system of knowledge our species has yet invented, in which case only your own ignorance is displayed by such a behavior.

tl;dr stop worrying about society, or expecting them to conform to your beliefs - simply be spiritual by yourself.

Teenagers have always been depressed, dipshit. Probably more so in the past. The difference is, now while we are materially wealthy, nobody has anything to strive for --- no ideals or morals other than blind hedonism. We've also decided to medicalise teenage angst (something that is more often than not overcome with time) so that teens are pushed into the psychiatric system that strips "patients" of individual sovereignty in favor of psychological pseudoscience, not to mention the drugs and institutions which physically choke individual freedom.

I could write about her for hours, friend, and I have - i have written dozens of posts on /lit/ about her this past year. My obsession with this girl gives my life meaning - everything I do, in every field of life, is only for the purpose of becoming something she might admire, or think well of. My love for her came from nowhere, and was caused by nothing - I saw her online, on a social media platform, when we were 16.

She immediately burned her name onto my heart, and for the past decade, I haven't walked a single day without thinking of her. I can acknowledge that her beauty isn't the reason I love her, even though she takes my breath. It isn't because she is a kind, caring, loving person, because she is not - at least not more than a hundred other women I know. It isn't because she is particularly smart, or well mannered, or even good. My love for her is entirely of my own making, a product of me. Just as I can't tell you why I like the warmth of summer, or the sound of rain - the taste of a sour apple, or the feel of soft fur - I cannot tell you what makes me love this girl so much. Somehow, I gave her my heart, and she locked it away. Now she keeps it locked up, and I can never give it again.

I will now go to bed, and dream of a world with only her and me, with only life and warmth, and love. Perhaps, by my love for her, God will see fit to love her and me. Maybe He will ransom us by this foolish, childish, obsessive love.
I wish you well, friend anon who read my posts. I hope you are warm and happy

this right here is what I'm talking about, the sort of thing I'd expect from those poor sods that parade around their fictional wives, this kind of madness and devotion, a one-sided love that by all accounts should not give anything back but in fact gives the lover his very life, and here it is being espoused by a man whose love isn't even entirely fictitious, rather an ideal and in the idealization the object of affection becomes a 'flower' as he puts it, one that 'radiates happiness', like a sun, comparisons that make my internal biases tingle
a description like this might be a little too similar to something of a relationship with the divine but if that's the way it has to go to get results, there's no pussyfooting around it
genuinely interesting posts anon, just remember that this isn't a position you can easily defend and accusations of delusion are definitely going to have a decent basis but you don't seem like the sort to let a few posts sway you

Nah. I mean not if I had to pit in the effort to win her over to the idea. I guess if she was keen and I had nothing better to do. Certainly not without sheath though.

>if non emergentism

But consciousness is emergent clearly. I don't think this discredits idealism though. The point is what does it emerge from? If you want the only idealism worth upholding read Kant and Schop-dog.
