I'm new to literature and starting the longest book I'll have ever read, Anna Karenina, because /lit/ told me to. Is the Pevear & Volokhonsky translation, the one in this penguin deluxe paperback (pic related) the right one to go with? What are some things to pay attention to or think about as a first timer in Russian lit?

Don’t do P&V, Maude exists and it is the superior translation. Just keep track of everyone’s names. AK is broken down into pretty small chapters and is very easy to read.

Every single character is going to have multiple names, because of formality variations. You know how japs use san, chan, tan? It's like that, except instead of a changing suffix, the entire fucking name changes.

Greatest book of all time, congrats on being able to read it for the first time. I don’t speak Russian so I can’t speak to the accuracy of the translations per se, but the Garnett translation is the best I’ve read. P&V is absolutely ass.

Most old Russian literature is like that. If you're lucky you will find an edition with a glossary of the names and nicknames of each character in it.

what is /lit/'s opinion on the Bartlett translation? I read it recently and enjoyed it but I haven't checked out any other translation.
