Western Civilization wasn't "saved" by a single person or group.

Ireland was a safe haven for literature, literacy, and learning when the Western half of the Roman Empire became overrun by the various barbarians. They gradually helped reintroduce these things back into the Western world over time.

Charlemagne was another person who helped Western civilization by building colleges and encouraging learning amongst his people.

Believe it or not another source of knowledge were the Arabs. During the Crusades, the Crusaders brought back with them many works of literature and medicinal knowledge that helped the West grow.

The biggest help for the developing Western world was the Eastern Roman Empire. They were a beacon of culture and shielded the West while in their infancy. The Western world was so thankful they sacked their capital during a crusade and stole their riches, leaving them vulnerable for the Turks to conquer them.
