Read the Enchiridion of Epictetus. It will also get you off of subscribing to Stoicism very fast.

Being stoic is generally a good thing but actual Stoic philosophy is ridiculously life denying and defeatistic. It posits that you basically cannot control anything, such as what others think of you (even though you can, even if you don't have complete control over them) so don't even try, and advises you things like don't be sad if your wife and kids die because you don't love individual people really but the idea of family.
