I like Hamlet a lot, but I have to agree with OP. Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth are unremarkable. Othello, A Midsummmer Night's Dream are eh. King Lear I haven't read, and I like the Tempest

Uhh Hamlet and Merry Wives are pretty cool, otherwise yeah. He occasionally stumbled into moments of brilliance but it's mostly just acceptable or below that light entertainment.

It's hard to appreciate how great they are because you've consumed so much media that draws on it. He invented a crapload of tropes you see overused in television and other media.
