Very similar. In-depth study of PSYCHOLOGY, a word I put emphasis on like Swann in the first volume lightens the words that he is afraid will make him sound snobbish or intellectual. Both give insights on inner-life, social interactions, love and its details, and vice, but I put Proust on a slightly higher plane because of his asides and the higher influence of Schopenhauer.

Since you like long novels strongly focused on character development, have you ever read “The Dream of the Red Chamber”? I never read it myself, but it’s supposed to be a great tale of humanity, and a great portrait of women psychology. The author supposedly said that when he was grow up and bearded he realized that the girls he had grew up with were not only morally, but also intellectually and spiritually superior to him and to most distinguished men of the State.
