The bar fight was exactly that; a bar fight. So not murder. Conan definitely wanted to kill that pirate captain to take over his ship and crew, but Conan at least DUELED him instead of outright murdering him. The guy he murdered in Rogues in the House was simply walking down the stairs after doing business with the prostitute Conan was after. He was completely innocent and Conan killed him purely out of anger. And then ironically enough Conan DOESN'T kill the prostitute who definitely deserves to die because Conan doesn't kill women.

kinda off-topic but is there a good alternative to calibre?
i use calibre on my server along with calibre-web so i can read my shit wherever i want to. i really havent bothered to fix the metadata and my ebook library is over 20k books right now with many duplicates or different formats. so i figured its time i started organizing it and get rid of all the duplicates. issue is calibre craps itself everytime i try to do anything other than just adding new books to the library. it just cant handle all them books.

I don't hate him, but reading his books is very unsatisfying. He writes some good characters (mainly Glokta), but his stories don't really go anywhere and the details of the world he created are a complete mess that don't make sense. Maybe if you're the kind of reader who only cares about "cool" scenes and never sits back and tries to take in the bigger picture, you'll enjoy him. But from the perspective of somebody who reads a lot of epic fantasy Abercrombie is definitely a hack writer half-assing his way into the genre.

In terms of influence? He can't be. He's basically the patron god of fantasy now. No other author has been able to rise above the march of time to join him at the table and form a new pantheon of fantasy writer gods, Tolkien reigns alone. Despite being dead for decades new writers are forced to grapple with his legacy, with his name, which is known everywhere.

GRRM could have the potential to join Tolkien at the table, he's certainly famous enough, but the real issue is staying power. Can he sustain this level of fame and influence after the HBO series ends? If not he'll just be another popular author that failed to leave his mark and fade into history while Tolkien continues on into the future, alone and brilliant, forever.

The characters are deeply fleshed out, but he warned, this is a VERY complex story so pay attention. If youre not exceptionally bright you will miss out on a lot. Goodkinds philosophies on everything from love to morality are so unapologetically real that many people might get turned off. Do not read the seeker if youre not ready, these books and characters will change your perspective on life. For the better? Maybe, maybe not.

Just finished reading pic related + The Island and Giants short stories. I'm a little underwhelmed, to be honest. It was a good concept but it could have benefitted from a full novel length.
We barely get any glimpse about what's happening outside of the ship or what the things that come through the gates are. At one point, the ship is said to be off course not because of a navigation error but because the universe itself has shifted, but then its never mentioned again.
In the second half of the novel, all sense scale is thrown out of the window and the events may as well take place over a few weeks. It just felt like a waste of a good concept.
But at least the novel didn't suffer from the usual cringey, repetitive dialogue that plagues most of Watts' other novels.
Anyway, 6/10. Would recommend.

So I finally made it through the Sword of Truth series, ands wew lad does aside from his Ayn Rand fetish does Goodkind just throw his fetishes in there. Dude even has a NTR fetish but never goes all the way with the female lead.

What are your thoughts on Discworld? I've read about 22-25 of them following the main storylines and quite enjoy them, but I'm a really easy to please guy so I'm worried I'm not looking at them critically enough. For example, with the exception of The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic (mostly due to them being very early works) I love Rincewind, but apparently he has the least enjoyable books to both Pratchett and readers held up only because Rincewind is the main character, and he's really fun.
