I don't mind them being unlikable, what I founf annoying in the games was the fact that they (mages and sorcerers) were portraid as victims even tho they've proven to be unlikable, scheeming little rats. I just want them to get called on their bullshit. If the books do this, I'll read them right away.

The Last Wish is one of my favorite books. There's something special about it. The characters are vivid, the prose is good (at least in the spanish translation), and the stories are so charming. The second book is also very good. Now, the novels... in my opinion they're a convoluted piece of shit with no sense of direction. I read two or three of them before abandoning them for good. My advice would be that you read Last Wish and Sword of Destiny, and then, for your own good, skip the rest.

There isn’t much to summarise, the first half in the book is a princess bitching about how hard it is to be a princess. There’s a bunch of side characters with interesting schemes which kept me interested. Then they all die, the schemes go nowhere and the princess starts cucking her husband (who conviently dies shortly after) with some dude who turns out to be evil, despite none of the previous points of view from his friends, wife, mentor or father hinting at this.
Naturally having an evil husband and a bunch of convieniantly dead side characters the princess has to take charge and shows the boys who’s boss.
There’s an interesting side plot family dynamic, when a brother accidentally kills his sister and has to cover it up by killing the rest of his siblings and becomes increasingly paranoid, but about 3 quarters of the way through he’s just never mentioned again.

Naval fantasy has been my obsession for a while, there's never enough of it. I have no idea how accurate any are to real life sailing but here are some books that fit

To start The Long Ships is technically historical fiction rather than fantasy but it's amazing, the seminal Viking novel.

Inda and The Fox are just fantastic adventure fantasy, the first one starts off doing the classic military school fantasy thing but switches to nautical pirate fantasy at about halfway through, the sequel continues this.
There's further sequels but I've never read them.

Child of a Hidden Sea is a fairly weak portal fantasy/romance but the nautical world built in it is fantastic.

Liveship Traders is an all around incredible work that is built around magical sailing, it's Robin Hobb at her absolute peak

The Half Drowned King is contemporary viking historical fiction, I didn't really like it much but it's an option. The plot's fairly domestic though so the ships are mainly just used to move between plot locations

The Queen of All Crows is the first book in a sequel trilogy of Steampunk fantasy/mystery novels but it again has a unique and fairly interesting nautical world.

The second Gentleman Bastards is largely ship based but it's pretty shit at the ship stuff imo

Stuff I haven't read wot is nautical: The Scar, Hawkwood and Kings has one nautical character apparently (I bounced off this hard after like 20 pages), The Red Wolf Conspiracy is set on a boat but I haven't looked into it beyond that.

Finally Temeraire is Napoleonic fantasy but with Dragons instead of boats and Railsea is Moby Dick with trains instead of boats

Read Adrian Selby dude, Snakewood is very pure grimdark and a good read but his new novel is fucking incredible

Also KJ Parker is hard to actually fit into a genre but he's the absolute master of grim downer fantasy. (Which is kind of bizarre because he writes purely comic novels under his real name)
Savages is the closest he comes to a traditional grimdark novel.

Reading Atrocity Archives because I need to finish off books to get back on goodreads pace lol

It's fine, I stopped reading because it has a little short sequel story after the title one ends and that opens with a massive loredump that was boring to read.
Overall I so far think Merchant Princes is the better stross series but given that this one has more acclaim and attention I'll give it another book or two.
Funnily enough the whole government bureaucracy thing is fun to read it's the bits where he tries to fit his lovecraftian horrors into semi-plausible science that I find tedious.

Before this I read Trail of Lightning after seeing it in the Hugo noms. It's a fun novel set in a mad max postapoc reservation until the last like 10% of the book where there's suddenly three different asspulls and one of those shitty fantasy endings that happen when the author sets up a fight but doesn't want to make the fight the ending.

Finally before that I read The Raven Tower which felt like a real fucking waste of time by the end and quite frankly wouldn't even work as a story without the second person narration gimmick.

I can't even remember much of the series after that and never got around to the third book because of how none of the 2nd book stuck in my mind

(also Sanderson's success is pretty fucking clearly down to him ripping off power systems from shonen manga/anime and introducing them to western audiences which is hilarious)

Vince's stamina is like ~180. He can handle his harem, the real issue is that other matters keep him away from his home.

Almost anything that happens in fantasy would be a chore if you actually had to do it but that doesn't stop you from enjoying it in fiction.

>> No.12882288

>>12882261
Basically the narrator is a seemingly disembodied voice that is "talking" to the protag for the entire book. Eventually it turns out that they're a living god who was manipulating events to get what they wanted.
Basically the entire book is a villains "here's what I was secretly doing" speech except that they succeed in everything they wanted and then the book ends and its a standalone with no sequel.
Because of this there's exactly one moment in the entire book where the characters have any real chance to affect events and there's zero possibility of them acting any differently to how they did.

I think Leckie was trying to write a tragedy or something but it absolutely doesn't work.

I personally think that is dumb as hell, but there are certainly people (like yourself) who enjoy that sort of thing. If you don't enjoy that stuff, then you absolutely should not be reading Sanderson. The man doesn't have a lot of range -- you know what you're getting. That also means that if you find him a slot, there's no point to going any further.

>(also Sanderson's success is pretty fucking clearly down to him ripping off power systems from shonen manga/anime and introducing them to western audiences which is hilarious)

"Sanderson is anime" is something of a meme. Because it's true.

I think a fair number of his readers do understand that he's ripping off/appropriating/using shonen tropes in his writing. Again, this is what some people want.

That's a lie.
>When lorelei first starts seducing both binder and the other guy in the room by saying she could take both of them at once I didn't think much of it, I figured she would lure them into complacency by kissing the both of them, putting them to sleep and maybe stealing the handcuff keys or something, just a quick thought though and then that changed and she had only binder in the room with no keys or anything whatsoever to stop her from knocking him out to making him do something like open the door and letting her go free and making him forget. But no. She just goes on to thoroughly enjoy screwing him considering the prick was one of the guys who arrested the "only man she needs" and "the love of her life" etc... The thing is I won't begrudge her banging the guy if not for the fact that Alex has gone though so much bloody pain from either having his wife/love cheating or betraying Trust all throughout his many reincarnations. Never mind the fact that he told her he couldnt handle that. The stupid bitch admits to him openly how she could have found other solutions but instead chose to screw him because he was attractive and she just fucking had to. The author appeared to not give a flying fuck about the damage this might cause and blatantly made Alex not seem to really care???? Are you kidding me?? He also seems to accept the fact that Rachel watched the whole thing and didn't once stop and think what that might do to him? My opinion of her dropped completely, I didn't really care about the kiss on drew even if that was a surprise, I mean she feels everything that lorelei feels and all she knows is that she has to watch her Fuck another man because it feels good. What complete and total Bullshit. She - the haloed fucking angel who knows more than most about how bad Alex's past lives were couldn't seem to care how all Alex does is to help and make sure no one's feelings are hurt doesn't even second guess how much pain that would cause him realistically? Are you joking????

Meh. Chemist travels back in time. It's pretty bad, to be honest. The interludes are way too long and I just didn't care about the characters, which made me skip half the book (that's the amount of interludes I estimate there is in the two books I read).

One thing that stuck to me was that, apparently, exercising was invented in the modern era, or something.

Succubus is a major redflag. I think like 90% of books featuring succubus romance have cucking somewhere in them.
>The succubae seduction
>purgatory wars
>good intentions
>alternate places
All feature cucking. I'm probably missing some because if the blurb hints at a succubus I just skip it. They are just terrible love interests by default. I mean, they feed on sexual energy, or on sexual fluids, or on sex itself. Why would you read this if not to see her sexing around?

>This series has done something for me no other has ever done before: make me hate the main character. The obvious political bias of the author and evil corporation trope is hard enough a self righteous pinhead that refuses to be held accountable or work to make his world a better place is no different than many of the other snowflake sjw types protesting today. It is too bad because Elliott can tell a good story and if he had put just a little effort into it this could grow into something as deep and rich as the Honorverse series. I do hope so and will read the rest of the series in hope he does but the only place I want to see this "Hero" is at the firing squad.
