He is a symbolic character meant to deliver a lesson, so yes in a way. He’s supposed to show what strict individualism gets you. Is I not realistic enough in this? I think Ayn Rand’s individualists fail harder.
I read one book three separate times when I was younger and it was pure schlock, so don’t worry about it

Rand individualists successfully further their lesson in individualism though. At worst Rearden fails initially but still ends up learning what corruption he was giving consideration to.
