Why is this general so autistically devoted to shitting on Sanderson? He's not perfect by any means but that doesn't mean he's bad. Not even mediocre. He's good, one could even say above average. Far better that GRRM, at least (although that's not saying much). Say what you will about Sanderson, but he doesn't write 1200 manuscripts of nothing. Granted, I've only read Mistborn 1, 2 and 3, Elantris and Warbreaker, but they're pretty entertaining. Shit happens all over a chapter and not just on its final two pages, like GRRM does. Plus the man knows how to write a climax. The prose is fluid and clear, it's never pretentious (fuck you Rothfuss), the characters are few but interesting and the worldbuilding is deep enough without ever being dense. I think what everybody at /sffg/ holds against him is that he uses magic systems, while everyone here seems to prefer grimderp mysterious magic a la GRRM. Personally, I don't care which one an author uses, but Sanderson sticks to his guns and does a fantastic job with them, in the end it's always logic that untangles a knot. Also, he pays attention to the importance of religion in creating a fantasy world, something most modern fantasy writers choose to ignore. Anyways, I read Powder Mage is a good enough substitute series for a Sanderson connoisseur but I kinda get the feeling it sucks. Does anyone here recommend it?

I don't even like grum but he's way better than Sanderson in every way, other than writing speed and maybe prose.

People dislike Sanderson because he thinks infodumping and worldbuilding to bloat up his books is a good substitute for plot; which it isn't. When he's not being an autist and building his world he goes into full on anime mode. There's also the thing about all his cardboard characters and bland dialogue, seriously I've seen characters in children's books that have more depth than the ones he writes. He tried writing a deep and conflicted character and we ended up with fucking Shallan who makes everyone who reads her chapters want to stab themselves in the eye.

Don't get me wrong, I respect him, he has an enviable work ethic and is clearly very dedicated to "his" way of writing but that does not make his books good in anyway. They're not bad for beginners but the problem is a lot of the time the beginners get stuck in the Cosmere loop and stop exploring all other books and fall into the trap of thinking that Sanderson's way of spoonfeeding information is the only way fantasy should be written.

Correct me if I'm wrong I think you are one of those new readers, probably wanted to get into fantasy after watching GoT read ASoIaF, didn't like it and then found Mistborn which is the most anime book ever written and fell in love, correct?

As for Powder Mage, the magic system is not as detailed as the ones in Sanderson's books if that's what you're looking for, it's still a hard magic system though. It's a flintlock gun military fantasy with wizards and gods. The first book is fine, books 2 and 3 have their moments but are shit for the most part. The novellas n between are great. There's a sequel series and it's fantastic, a huge improvement over the main one. It's worth it to get through the main series just to read the sequel series, it's that good. If you like war, guns and magic all mixed up, give it a shot.

I read the first part of Mistborn and stopped because I was bored. I can't pretend my opinion is particularly well informed, but I don't think the characters were good, and it mostly seemed to be about the cool system of super powers he thought up. I don't find super power systems like that very magical or interesting..

People shit on popular things because there's no point in shitting on things hardly anyone likes or has even heard of.

>Correct me if I'm wrong I think you are one of those new readers, probably wanted to get into fantasy after watching GoT read ASoIaF, didn't like it and then found Mistborn which is the most anime book ever written and fell in love, correct?
No, I read books 1-4 before the TV show premiered. I guess it's mostly me, but GRRM's modus operandi of narrating what the character has been up to since the last time we saw him for 8 pages before moving the plot forward in the last 2 got tiresome. Westeros has a rich history going on, but some aspects just never really made sense to me (religion being a very neglected element of the world for the first three books, the scope being way too big, and the world basically taking 0 measures against the fucked up seasons, for example, a 3 year winter should obliterate the Vale of Arryn). I don't really love the Mistborn series, but even though I admit they're very anime-y, I think they're fun to read and at the same time manage to throw in some grimderp stuff to counterbalance what at first seems like a very lighthearted story (Kelsier's death, for example). I don't remember the infodumping been so atrocious, but then again it's been a few years since I read his books. Actually from what I remember he didn't dump too much info at first, so he needed to pull some things out of his ass in later books.

Read Claw of the Conciliator. Shit's weird. I don't feel like I have much idea what's going on. More specifically I don't understand any of the characters. Including Severian, despite having read 500 odd pages of his first person story.
For my tastes it's all a bit too enigmatic. I appreciate making a book that you can get a lot more out of by reading a second or third time, but reading it the first time is just confusing.

I agree with you about Sanderson to a point -- particularly the ones you've read. He brought the idea of "ending" back to fantasy and deserves great praise for that. But now I think he's just churning out too much shovelware. I might go back to him when he finishes his big series.

I read Powder Mage and found it flat. There is one good subplot, but the main thrust of it is bland and dull. If you want a substitute Sanderson try Dave Wolverton, who taught Sanderson at BYU. The first few books of his Runelords series (written as David Farland) are really good -- it has a Sanderson-style magic system that's wonderfully enmeshed in the story. I remember it fading after a bit (eager publisher syndrome) but well worth starting. I also really enjoyed The Golden Queen series. A little offbeat, with a talking bear who finds his calling in Christ.

I think because it isn't writing. Writing requires the honing of various skills and then employing them in a direction that eventually requires concluding. Worldbuilding on the other hand is the art of stacking as many "wouldn't-it-be-cool-if's" on top of each other as you can, which is a fairly fun thing to do as it has a daydream-like quality to the process, but ultimately teaches you very little. There was the "real" world and the "dark" world and the only way to get into the dark world was completing a ritual. Once inside the dark world, it switched from text to graphic novel and the point was to survive death games like mazes and such. The reward for completing a game was a ticket for the train station back to the real world. Jesus is pronounced Hee-seuss in Spanish / Portuguese, and it's a common name given to children.
So again. Why would I want a spanish guy up in my guts?

Spic here, this is wrong.
Anyway, the """joke""" doesn't work at all since Jesus is also a name in English and you don't hear the pronunciation in written form. And even if it worked, it's not very funny.

There's Tolkien's success, and the tendency of fantasy readers to buy by the pound, but I think the setting plays such a big role in fantasy that a trilogy is a way of amortizing that investment across three books

I don't think trilogies are bad provided that 1) the author isn't just mindlessly creating one because it's the standard, and 2) they actually conceive their story as a trilogy from the start, not the "write the first book as a test, write two more if it takes off" shit that some authors do.
They have a place, but oftentimes they're created more by market demand rather than by what the story requires.

yeah, I was tinkering with it pretty recently. I think I finally have a plot more or less finalized that has almost everything I want included at this point its more about silencing my nagging autism long enough to write the damn thing.

oddly enough, its looking pretty sparse on food porn, but if the hunger games could manage it I should be able to as well. after all, im already ripping off the underland chronicles, might as well just make my goal beating Suzanne Collins at her own game
