Not this.

The red flag is what books they recommend. They will obviously shill bestselling novels to keep afloat, but be wary of what is recommended by the staff themselves. I wouldn't be surprised if many bookshop assistants had Rupi Kaur tattoos.

I agree that book stores are not in the business of selling books. Rather they have become a statement of the owners view on social correctness. Any books on conservative views are laid face down on the political shelf. But plenty of socialist propaganda is readily lined up with all the respect "good" literature deserves. The Holy Bible is in the mythology section or over with transcendental mediation and yoga in the spiritual health department. Plenty of fantasy filth is available to please the deviants or books on starting a marijauana farm will please the pot heads. The children's section is full of "Susie has two moms" books and is the typical open reading topic on Tuesdays for all the four year olds who's moms are too preoccupied with the free w-fi to pay attention to the reeducation being foisted on their children. Global warming and faux climate change propaganda is on the front table and "Abortion is My Choice" books are standing up on the health display screaming "just kill it"!
If i thought for a second that the playing field was fair for those who write books with alternate views, I might say that todays book stores represent a positive influence in a community. But the culture correction they are peddling is so obvious. They pretend neutrality on information but direct the customers eyes to the owners views on their perfect community. And please dont make the claim that local book stores are a "public service". That's what libraries are for. Local book stores have a bias and an agenda. Just admit it.

Mostly luck, I used to walk between my apartment building to the local grocery store, about a mile walk, and it was in a small non-descript building. I was bored, but it wasn't long until I was in a small room with lots of strange books (nothing traditional, nothing in common with the city libraries) and two old men telling me about the myths of Masonry and how they vet members, and how it wasn't a "secret society" but rather a "society with secrets". It is most definitely not scientific. If you actually look at the data, you'll find that the man-made carbon dioxide in the air only accounts for 2% of the total amount. Furthermore, the data we have is not extensive enough to draw any conclusions. In fact, it just shows slight fluctuations which are completely natural.

The only reason why man-made climate change isn't laughed out of the scientific community is that going against the narrative would have you out of a job fairly quickly. There's simply too much money to be made out of inducing fear in a population to drive them towards purchasing more expensive products. You'll notice how the people pushing this agenda don't actually follow what they preach.

One time, my niece (in 7th grade) needed Ready Player One for school. Not here to talk about the quality of that book or the fact that it is assigned reading for whatever reason, but undoubtedly a very popular book. Hell, Spielberg directed a movie based on it.

Anyway, instead of BAM or Barnes and Noble, I decided to take her to a local bookstore in town with a surprisingly large selection. Looked quaint, had an impressive selection, etc. Very unorganized though - basically a section for fiction, non-fiction, and children's.

Went inside, and we asked the clerk if they had Ready Player One. She was maybe late 40's and had soccer mom hair, if you know what I mean. Freckles and a blouse that looked like she probably had a "Friends Gather Here" wooden Hobby Lobby sign in her living room and goes to Panama city beach every June.

>"Excuse me, do you have "Ready Player One?"
>"Ready what now?"
>"Ready Player One"
>"I don't think I've heard of that one."
>"It's.. a young adult sci-fi novel"

She goes "hmm," and starts clacking away on a cigarette smoke-stained computer keyboard

>"Oh, I see it here."
>"You have it?"
>"No, I see it here on Amazon."
>"Oh..."
>"Yeah, we don't have a catalogue or anything. Do you want me to order it for you?"
>"...from Amazon?"
>"Yes, we have Prime and can get it here in two days."

I tell her no thanks and my niece and I leave.

Moral of the story, little local mom and pop book stores look good on paper but the reality is it is mostly donated children's books, copies of the "Left Behind" series, and textbooks from the community college down the road.

This is the one picture they have online.

Generally speaking, used book stores are terrible. They're either "fake" in the sense that they sell other kinds of merchandise or even sell lots of new books but keep the used section as a way to maintain their "street cred", or they're run by experienced book dealers who price everything as high as they can get away with and put all the really good expensive stuff online.

The best place to buy used books is at university book sales or established annual local book sales because the staff are usually not experienced enough to pick out the really good stuff and mark it up, and in general they're not greedy enough to make the average price very high either.

It really doesn't matter, even if you are right. Change is universal. The world will just adapt; the ill-suited will die out and new species will form.

Ok I am gonna stop this climate change debate bullshit in this thread right now.
Anthropogenic Climate Change is real, but a non issue. The entire "debate" is only held so loudly and obnoxious to keep everyone more or less distracted from enviornmental problems we are having right now and are much more pressing(and, if we would solve them, would negate any climate change consequences). Soil degradation, net loss of forest, ocean accidification, desertification, world wide plastic polution, habitat loss, relative biomass of huamns and their stock compaired to all other life, waste disposal and more are all way more pressing, but have less spotlight, because their solutions would not be able to advertised with a carbon tax as a solution(though it isn't in cc aswell).
While urbanist leftists get set up to talk stupid and uninformed shit on their smartpones, wearing sweatshop clothes about the enviornment, retarded rightwingers get baited into a contrarian stand against anything remotly enviornemental and suck corporate cock instead.
Both sides are getting played here to keep everyone from ignoring the real problems that would actually costs international corps serious money.

I always thinks it's funny that whenever you enter a bookstore, used or new, the owners are never reading. Always on the computer, playing solitaire or on Facebook or some shit.

Best used store I went to was in Camden, London. Had a great conversation with the owner about time traveling composers. They had an old penguin classics edition of part 2 and 3 of the divine comendy, which was great because across the pond some time before I found part 1. Great find.

Some countries (China, India) are at this point doing more harm than the first world; others are not. But the problem is that if we look at the cumulative impact, then the 1st world is still in the lead. How exactly can we tell these countries "tough luck, you faggots should've industrialised earlier. Now you can't."? It's incredibly self-serving and hypocritical. Global warming is real, yes, but its severity, and the need to remedy it, are vastly overstated by the media, and often for diabolically masochistic aims. Ask yourself this: if climate change is this massive apocalypse that would destroy human civilization, then why is it that in the Paris Climate Accords that India and China, two massive polluters, are allowed to keep polluting because they're "developing economies"?

Because they make a valid argument which is that historically, the West has polluted more, and that polluting is necessary for those two to catch up to the West. We also can't force them to do everything we want them to, and some politicians are far more interested in short-term gain than the long term survival of the species.

China and India have nukes. I don't think that a nuclear winter would work as a solution to climate change. There's also the issue of convincing the electorate to perpetrate a nuclear holocaust or just a regular holocaust. Remember, normal people don't view non-whites as non-humans. There's also the issue that these two billion people or so are important to the global economy and wiping them out would be catastrophic in its own right.
> making everyone's life shittier
Yes anon, sacrifices will have to be made. No, the Chinese and Indians are not going to be riding SUVs like our boomers did and laugh at dumb whitey who is paying for it. China is purportedly taking climate change seriously as well, and while it's important to make sure they actually do that, we shouldn't pretend that the West is paying the full price while everyone else gets to party on.

What do you mean "meme"? What gives you the confidence to dismiss what scientists understand the impact of nuclear war to be? The difference between a nuclear test and a nuclear bomb is that nuclear tests presumably use less powerful devices and are done in small quantities (nobody's blowing up thousands of bombs simultaneously) over long periods of time. Nuclear warfare is obviously not like that. Here's a paper that predicts the effect of localised nuclear war: https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/2013EF000205
