Plan to re read The Odyssey. Why should I? What is the real significance of this bookand what is the best translation?

The Odyssey is a really good look into bits and pieces of iron age Greek history. Our records of that time period are virtually non existent except really what we read from Homer's Odyssey. Interesting points being how different city states were ruled, places in the Mediterranean and their geography were found out beacuse of the Odyssey. I don't wanna go on but it's good, way better than the Iliad. As far as translations go, the Homeric Greek is the best possible version you can read, but in English I suggest Fitzgerald.

Richard Lattimore's translation is good, pretty split between reverence for the form and making it palatable to a modern english speaker, I haven't read any of the new Emily Wilson translation, but I hear from friends that she's much more liberal with changing the literal text for the sake of imitating a recited/poetic experience that the original audience might have had.
