Everybody knows that Flann O'Brien was better, simply because he admitted that he was just trolling.

Yes, because Moby Dick's Prose and depth far surpasses Ulysses' in every way, shape, and form...

Or maybe you guys are just idiots.

You need to read the Moby-Dick critical addition. I can grantee you that most of that book went right over your head.

The best book I have ever read, hands down, is The Count of Monte Cristo. Nothing competes with it. The End.

Moby Dick HAS prose, of whatever quality.

Ulysses has some guy ranting about taking a piss.

It was good until the near end when they spent forever going on and on about those lovers.
And the ending was pretty ordinary.

>> No.1284129

>>1284096
I don't know what you mean by "going on about those two lovers." I mean I understand their backstory takes time to flesh out... but so does every other one. That's part of why it's such an epic, amazing book; there is a whole world of characters around Edmund Dantes.

As for the end I would argue that that was at least the falling action. I think it was good that Dumas decided on a much more realistic ending rather than a truly "happy" ending. The reader, like Edmund, gets vindication but lasting peace and happiness is questionable.

Also, you have to be careful. I bought what I thought was the full book from B&N and it was an abridged version... sure as hell looked like a full book. Had to get a 3-book Dumas Collection to get the unabridged Count.

>>1284085
I am glad you agree, but I felt spoiled with Monte Cristo. It was his first work I read and I have read 3 Muskateers and Man in the Iron Mask and they just don't compare. Is anything else he wrote really above and beyond?

Also, on an unrelated note, I just read 1984 for the first time, and wow that book is nothing short of amazing. I found it hard to identify with or it would be my top book, but it really gives you a lot to think about. Orwell was so ahead of his time.

Edmund's lover was unnecessarily tacked on to make it a happier ending.

>> No.1284157

>>1284153
Tacked on unnecessarily? I heartily object good sir. She was in there in order to bring closure to the relationship that her and Edmund had. The reader needed to know what was going to happen with that-after all, she was a major motivation for his quest throughout the book for revenge. I was definitely wondering about Mercedes for most of the story.
