Can't speak for places with free college but it's pretty simple on the US. It's a (well earned) push back against the retarded "everyone should go to college" meme that left many young people with tons of debt and a piece of paper that says "u r smart".

College is an industry here, supported by a culture where parents, teachers, and counselors alike insist that you must go to college to be successful. The word successful being key, sure they throw in words like well-rounded and enlightened too but most high school kids won't be convinced to drop 30k on that would they? So they're lied to that college is necessary for success, or rather that college guarantees success.

Then you have a certain resentment develop once they get their piss poor entry level job (or minimum wage job in the case of liberal arts) after years of study and 30k in debt while Jim went to some trade school for a year or two at a fraction of the cost and outearns you. Jim in turn is resentful because the educated folk think they're so superior even though they are often less successful financially and clearly not as smart as they think due to falling for the scam that is modern college.

It wouldn't be as much of a problem if college was about the idealistic pursuit of knowledge and growth but with it's current price tag financial success overshadows those as a far more important consideration

It's a side effect of degrees being oversaturated due to competition caused by shitty recruiting standards and nepotism in unrelated jobs. Prospects in arts academia are essentially non-existent due to universities meeting this greatly increased demand for degrees by cutting other humanities departments (english, linguistics, philosophy, etc) and diverting resources to either making these departments more profitable (trend of philosophy departments advertising law concentrations) or cutting them partially or entirely for the sake of other profitable departments. Trade schoolers are right, if it's pointless for someone to get a university degree which will leave them with debt and a low paying job, it makes perfect sense to go to a trade school and get a good return. You don't go for the humanities because you want to get paid, you go into it because you want to.
