I guess I dont understand this sentiment, are you saying that you couldn't do self-promotion in the 21st century and have it actually catch on? Not saying that is what he is doing, but I would say someone like Tao Lin quite literally started his own vanity publishing company, put out his own vanity works, got them distributed despite being shit, and then self-promoted them into being considered 'literature'. So the argument that it can't be done is silly.
