I'm convinced that people know what happened in the first part only because it's explained more clearly in the rest of the book. Quentin talks about a lot of the stuff and family relations.

you have read his previous books to understand the sound and the fury. Jumping right into it without any prior reading is like jumping straight into Ulysses without having read the Iliad,Odyssey and any previous Joyce, Jumping straight into it is like reading Gravitys Rainbow without even know or touching any other page of Pynchon, Jumping Straight into it is like reading any Western Philosophy without having read Kant and Jumping straight into it is like reading any modern day philosophy without having read everything before. Ofcourse you wont understand! Your visiting China without googling any of the social norms, table manners and how tourist are suppose to act! Then you wonder why all the locals are giving you awkward glances.
