Well, partly because it blends two of my favorite things, Gene Wolfe and Tolkien. I'm also rereading LOTR right now, and all of a sudden I remembered the essay. It's very interesting to get the perspective of other writers and critics on a work like LOTR. I know Harold Bloom doesn't like it, for example.
