Sweden incorporates a good deal of 'socialist' economic policies, though their companies are not "government owned" they do have what we would consider absurdly high taxes and a vast array of social programs that have left Sweden as one of the most prosperous countries in the world.

Not socialism necessarily, but a lot of things we have in developed nations like minimum wage, unemployment benefits, welfare, etc. are born out of socialist policies.

The AFL draft

>> No.1278406

This morning I was awoken by my alarm clock powered by electricity generated by the public power monopoly regulated by the US Department of Energy. Then I took a shower in the clean water provided by the Municipal Water Utility. After that I turned on the TV to one of the FCC regulated channels to see what the national weather service of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration determined what the weather was going to be like using satellites designed, built and launched by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. I watched this while eating my breakfast of the US Department of Agriculture inspected food and taking drugs which have been determined as safe by the Food and Drug Administration.

At the appropriate time as regulated by the US Congress and kept accurate by the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the US Naval Observatory, I get into my parent's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration approved automobile to go to school on roads that have been built by the local, state, and federal Departments of Transportation, possibly stopping so my parent can go purchase fuel of a quality level determined by the Environmental Protection Agency, using legal currency issued by the Federal Reserve Bank. I then exit the vehicle and enter a public school which was constructed because of the Department of Education and get the proper education I need to graduate.

After school I go home on a school bus also funded by the DOE, approved by the NHTSA, on roads safely constructed by the DOT to a house that has not been burned down in my absence because of the state and local building codes and Fire Marshall's inspection nor plundered of it's valuables thanks to the local Police Department.

I then log on to the internet which was developed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Administration and post on FOX news forums how SOCIALISM in medicine is BAD because the government can't do anything right.

>> No.1278407

In the early progressive era, socialist governments were elected in hundreds of American cities. The state of Wisconsin was almost entirely governed by the American Socialist Party, and remained so into the 1960s.

The socialist party presidential candidate Eugen V. Debs received just shy of a million votes in the 1920 presidential election. He was in federal prison at the time, for opposing the draft.

Basically, what I'm getting at, is that it worked here. Like, in America. But conservatives have decided that SOCIALIZM OMG is a good buzz word to scare people who don't know how common it really is in America's history.

Socialism (not necessarily marxism) has done a lot for Europe. It really acted as a kind of platform for the emancipation of working people. Unless you want to insist its better if workers are underpayed because you think that makes an economy grow more efficiently or something like that (which could be disproven quite easily).
Communism, on the other hand, hasnt ever existed. However, this sort of makes sense when you really bother to try and make sense of Marx' theory of communism. He claimed communism would only work from the point in history where capitalist economy becomes completely obsolete, that means economically, culturally, etc... Think so many public replicator machines you can just make shit you like so you dont really need to get a salary job except if youd have some very pressing ambition to, but why would you? Seriously, the problem with Marx urging people to ACT NAO!!!! in his time is he was impatient and people were so stupefied by the industrial revolution they thought 1900 would be the end of history or something.
