Not really a story but the second hand store I used to volunteer for (Vinnie's) threw out like 90% of the books that were donated. Only shop that sells books near me is WHSmith. The closest proper book shop near me is a Waterstones I'd either need a 40 minute walk to get to or a bus ride which would cost £5.

The books themselves are also often up to double the price of what you can get online. Often the hardbacks are even cheaper online than the paperbacks in the shop.

What a mess.

In the future there won't be shops. Everything will be done online and delivered to you via an electric car driven by an AI. No human interaction necessary. I hope I will be dead before we get to that state though.

I dont know how sci-fi rates here, i honestly dont care. But that book kept me reading for several days straight. The only other two "books", because i treated them as one complete long story, were Tolkien's collection (The Hobbit, The Lord of The Rings trilogy and Silmarilion - all in one big, heavy hardback) and The Magician (The Magician, Silverthorn and Darkness over Sethanon). I like the antiquarian bookshops we have in town, but the owners seem to be the most autistic people I have ever seen. They barely say "Hello" when you come in, every interaction (even buying a book) seems like it is a tremendous effort for them. They have good prices, so I won't complain about their lack of social skills.

I've never been inside, people scare me.

so my one friend and I were really into history when we were younger and every couple of months his mom would bring us to half price books and we'd check out the history section for like half an hour. normally we'd just make fun of the fact that every single book on Germany was ww2 history or how there's no books on brown people cause we were some real intellectuals (we still do this). anyways, there was one book that caught our attention one time called Il Duce and his women. it was just the title, so fucking spectacular that we couldn't ignore it. so the first time we saw it we laughed and went off without another thought. then we came back and laughed again, and again, and again for a period of maybe 2 years, every time seeing it marked down. it was like chicken--how far down do they go in an attempt to sell it before just yeeting out? anyways, one time we come in and it's not there. no sign of it. to this day, every time we go there, we still just ask who the hell bought Il Duce and his women.
As it turns out it's apparently a decent biography of Mussolini with a weird title. But it's enough of a title to remember it.

It doesn't sound like you have a strong connection with her, despite your mutual philosophical interests (which if she's read Hegel seem pretty rare).

17 year olds on average are pretty damn immature, so that can be a turnoff. But if you won't take her to the bonezone simply because she's 17, being fixated on the number, I'm not sure if that reasoning holds. 24 is pretty young too dude, in the long run you're still just a kid.
