Books about how to cope with the fact that you'll never amount to greatness, will not be remembered, and will die after a lifetime mediocrity?

This keeps me up at night and terrifies me so I'm frozen in in-action. What do I do?

Read Meditations by Marcus Aurelius, he says a lot of stuff that helps with what you are talking about.

You're aspiring (or at the very least lamenting the impossibility of) to impress the collective conscious of humanity all across history, but I bet you don't even try to impress your close friends (heck you likely don't have any) neither impress yourself by doing something you couldn't or didn't do yesterday. There's more wrong with you than you imagine.

"Stoner" comes to mind, to mention one book. I guess you didn't read The Giver when you were a kid, so take a quick glance at that too, who knows.

Almost all the characters in this book are suffering this exact kind of torment - what makes it harder is they still lust for wealth and fame even as the reader can tell they'll never come close.

im finishing up On the Road and although main basis of the book is for sure not a reason to cope it really does help with it. Going around the continent from NY to CA to Denver them back to NY all in search for something beyond themselves in life or just escaping. They were living in the moment beyond themselves in search of something greater and Neal one of the main characters really points this out although its hard to make out what hes trying to explain sometimes. Jack's descriptions of lonely nights and rising dawns and falling dusk really captures it for me, its really a good book to capture whats beyond you and yourself and make you understand that theres more things to amount to then greatness.(Original scroll is like the best version)

Method 1:Realize this applies to EVERYONE. The "greatness" of people you know will be forgotten alongside yourself. Hummanity will have its final day, and ultimatley it's also just trivial nonsense.

Method 2:Immortalize yourself. Kill a notable person or produce a grand piece of art that will be remembered for years to come

Or just get a grip
