Laughed repeatedly at how stupid the Spartans are portrayed and how at times Renault (who wrote this in the 70's) turns this into Devilman Crybaby.

No, because the character doesn't freak out about becoming a bug and describe it like some kind of body horror. He just wakes up like a bug one day and says to himself "Welp, I guess I'm a bug now. Mom's gonna freak!" Sure he doesn't like how it inconveniences him but he does treat it like some really mundane situation. Also its an allegory, brainlet.
