How to get better at describing things visually? I am only good at describing concepts and ideas. Not the color of trees and what not.

>> No.12682494

use concret objegts to describe abstract emotions

1.emotion: sadness

"the melancholy trees danced in the wind"

this is good advice but attached to a faggot sentence. go read tolstoy/keats and see how the surroundings change when Lenin in Anna Karenina is lovestruck, morose, giddy, depressed, anxious, and go read Keats and see how he can pack joy into a grape

no 1. dont listen to this kind of advice unless its a really unexpected pairing

no 2. just list stuff out, be specific about what kind of tree it is, not that its green or some impotent color like emerald

no 3. read goddamn poetry

oh yeah, also, use an image to suggest an emotion over attaching an emotion to an image every sing time you can

and NEVER JUST EXPECT PPL TO BE MOVED BY YOUR DARKNESS/ENNUI/PHILIOGICAL HORNINESS

put goddam stuff in instead of goddam concepts, let your reader find the stuff

i actually stole the advice from ts elliott.

It makes sense, using physical objegts to describe emotions, ideas, and abstract concepts

retrospectively i would have dropped the word melancholy.

Another thing is, the old addage, "show, dont tell". Show that the character is sad, dont say it.

So you would show that the human is sad.

But you could also show that trees are sad.

All through actions and physical appearance

what would a sad person do?

lay in bed all day doing nothing.

What would a sad tree do?

Dead leaves on the dirty ground

>retrospectively i would have dropped the word melancholy.

then yeah for sure, but my point about specificity remains. trees are boring, loblolly pines, redwoods, quaking aspen, those are neat. i wanna know what kind of tree

If you're not the sort of person who notices trees, naturally you have little to say about them. Then again, if you don't read about trees you might not ever notice them.
