Hey /lit/

I'm exactly the opposite of an intellectual and educated person, but I am highly intelligent and very smart person nevertheless.
To be honest, I never read a book in my entire life, still my success in life is very far above average (financially, socially, etc).

My question is, why do people like you think that I am so dumb and you are so smart?
In my opinion the process of writing and especially reading is not a very efficient way at all to share ideas, thoughts, and information.
Stupid example: I can read a 500 pages book about some fitness program (takes several hours/days) or just watch a 1-2 hour long DVD that explains it all.
The human brain has a way higher input capacity than it's given by the inefficient procedure called reading.

Sorry if I come across as a bit mad, but it's people like you that sometimes made my life a lot harder just because of judging me for my lack of intellect.

The only disadvantage that I have to commit is my lack of eloquence, but I can live with that, seriously.

explain what's wrong about that statement.
I assume you are either born with a good/intelligent brain or you find a way to train it during life, and as I said I find there are more efficient ways to do that besides reading

My hypothesis: writing is optimal at some things, video is at others. Inception would be incredibly shallow if committed to written text as-is (a character's thoughts would follow his actions bit-for-bit, while the large amount of context switching would be unwieldy in text), Dune, heavily reliant on stream-of-consciousness passages describing thought processes, is shallow as a movie or mini-series.

You write like someone who is trying to appear smarter than they really are.

yes, as I admitted my eloquence is pretty bad so I always try hard. I don't care.

Novels VS movie is a good example, but I didn't mention it because in my opinion fictional stories won't increase your horizon anyhow (I don't consider reading novels intelligent)

Written communication is the most efficient way to share abstract. Your example of a fitness program is one where video is better, because it's easier to demonstrate a technique than to explain it in words. However, when you're trying to convey something that can't be put into a simple demonstration, writing is the best way to do it. Even a fairly slow reader can read at a faster rate than most people speak, so if the idea is abstract enough that it would be difficult or impossible to visually portray it in a video nothing is gained by using that medium and the rate of information transfer will be lower.

look, where is the contradiction?
intelligence has nothing to do with the amount of novels and books you read. see this >>1267025

first good answer, thank you.
but still, don't you think language and reading is still pretty primitive? I don't know how, but as I said I believe the brain could understand things much quicker than reading.

And what, in the end, isn't primitive?

>the brain could understand things much quicker than reading.
That depends on how quick you can read.

Also, I don't judge people by the books they read or don't read.

Who the fuck reads a 500 page book about fitness? I don't think you understand the /lit/ community.

>> No.1267070

there's a place for literature and there's a place for dvds, you're looking for an explanation rather than a perspective of an explanation, which would mislead to to believe what you're watching on your dvd is the whole story, which it is not
