Salter is an extraordinary writer, I quite enjoyed the novel, but honestly to me at least it had little substance and I can't pinpoint why. The story is timeless and simple, he's dead on with some psychological observations (like how rapidly the protagonist can flip from desiring his girlfriend to looking down on her/being disgusted or bored by her to thinking she's heaven again), I don't think any writer I've read is better at capturing a beautiful view or a new day breaking. It's of course highly subjective what you find sexy but his erotics were dead on to me, lyrical without being sterile or unrealistic, just what good sex with a compatible partner can be like. But for me it didn't rise above that, just a bunch of beautiful images. I didn't feel emotionally involved or touched by the ending.

Might be just me though, my father loves it and thought it was heartbreaking.
