What's a good introductory point to literary criticism and theory? It seems to have its own language that is completely alien to me. Are there any good books on the history or core basics of it?

I’ll say it again - Bennett and Royle’s introduction to literary criticism is the perfect starting point. The latter was my academic supervisor and is a very clued in guy

Erich Auerbach - Mimesis is a classic in the field.
Northrop Frye is very good as well.

Jacquelin Rose and Elaine Showalter I like, but may not be to everyone’s taste.
