Do I need to read anything before I read literary classical authors like Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Joyce, all the cliche 'smart' authors that get featured in liberal arts courses?

Will you not get everything if you read them blind?

Yes you need to start with the Greeks, progress to the Romans, go through the medieval period, the early modern period, the enlightenment, etc.

I'm stuck reading Plato's complete works, specifically at Sophist, and am being a pussy. Please help me understand this:

>Further if that WHICH IS is not a whole by possessing that as a characteristic, but rather just is THE WHOLE itself, THAT WHICH IS will turn out to be less than itself
>And because it's deprived of itself, THAT WHICH IS will NOT BEING, according to that account
>And everything will be more than one. since THAT WHICH IS and THE WHOLE will each have its own separate nature

>oh haha Plato is old, we’ve all made it past him. Wasn’t he btfo by (insert later faggot)?

Guess again. It might help to read the Stanford wiki and/or Plato’s Seventh Letter.
