What books should I read in these fields? I've read Mcluhan and was fascinated, but he's more of a poet and his work is ancient at this point.
I've read other "Toronto" guys like Ong and Innis, and I've read some secondary literature about these...

Whenever I try to find new books about this field, I either get meme books on how to sell products online, modern oratory or these supposed "classics" of the Toronto school. What is up with this field?

I've heard of German New Media, and I'm not sure where I'm supposed to start.

I'm ok with this, really, but this is still "media ecology", I want to get away from Toronto and anything Mcluhan was related to.

It's wierd how in some fields there are so many useless meme books that get chugged out every week but media studies(which by its nature I would have guessed be a very hot topic) always points to some half-reactionary lads from the 60's-70's(Maybe that's a good thing).

Sorry I really don't know much about media studies. I book that may fit is 'Television: Technology and Cultural Form' by Raymond Williams.
For a sociology/political take on communications try 'Communication Power' by Manuel Castells, it's a book that I like a great deal, but at the same time it isn't really pure communications theory.

Guenther Anders' work is interesting, but I'm not sure how much of his work has been translated. He was Hannah Arendt's first husband.

Where did I say Mcluhan was bad? I'm just asking for more perspectives other than "mysterious media guru".

Also,
>things that are ancient are bad

are you aware what Media studies even is? do you understand how much shit happened in terms of tech since Mcluhan was alive? Yeah, an update would be welcome.
